BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending Feb. 5, junior men's swimmer Lee Houchin garnered the distinction.
Houchin paced Indiana with three titles in a 134-108 win over No. 14 Purdue on Feb. 4 in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center in Bloomington, Ind. The win moved Indiana into a 6-3 lead over Purdue in the AT&T Crimson and Gold Cup Series.
In the opening event of the morning, Houchin anchored the 400-yard medley relay that blazed to a first-place time of 3:15.82. Not only did the effort clear the NCAA provisional standard, it now stands as the eighth-fastest time in school history. He won his second title of the day with a 20.77 in the 50-yard freestyle. Houchin then closed out the day victorious as the second leg of the first-place 400-yard freestyle relay.
Houchin earned the IU Athlete of the Week honor from a list of deserving student-athletes. The list of nominees included junior Courtney Johnson (women's track and field), junior Kiwan Lawson (men's track and field), senior Janis Pardy (water polo), senior Brady Richardson (wrestling) and junior Roderick Wilmont (men's basketball).
Hoosier Honor Roll
Junior Courtney Johnson (women's track and field):
Johnson swept the competition in the women's 60m hurdles at the Hoosier Relays. In the prelims, Johnson became the fourth Hoosier to meet a NCAA provisional qualifying mark when she recorded a first-place prelim time of 8.43. Johnson's prelim time marked a new personal and team best. Johnson went on to claim first place in the finals of the event with a time of 8.47.
Junior Kiwan Lawson (men's track and field):
After advancing to the finals of the men's long jump with a leap of 7.16m (26-6.00) at the Hoosier Relays, Lawson took runner-up in the event finals and became the fifth Hoosier this season to meet an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Lawson's finals jump of 7.50m (24-7.25) was a new personal and team best.
Senior Janis Pardy (water polo):
Senior Janis Pardy led the No. 11 Hoosiers in scoring at the season-opening Michigan Kickoff Tournament. Indiana, who was playing without two starters, went 1-3 with all three defeats coming at the hands of ranked opponents, including a pair in overtime. The former Canadian Junior National Team player capped the tournament with eight goals total, including her third career hat trick against No. 17 UC-San Diego.
Senior Brady Richardson (wrestling):
Richardson moved to 24-4 on the season, 12-1 in duals and 4-1 in Big Ten action with his victory over Minnesota's Mitch Kuhlman, 10-3. The win over the nation's No. 1 Golden Gophers helped the Hoosiers tie the match at 13-13 before Minnesota pulled away in the final three bouts to register the team victory. With Richardson's efforts on the season, he is currently ranked ninth in the country.
Junior Roderick Wilmont (men's basketball):
Wilmont returned to the starting lineup against Northwestern after coming off the bench in the last 11 games of the season. He lit up the Wildcats for a career-high 23 points on 8-of-13 from the field, including 5-of-10 from three-point range. Wilmont also was a handful for Northwestern for the second straight game in Assembly as he once again notched his career high against the Wildcats.
