TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Led by the efforts of senior pitcher Mariangee Bogado at the plate and from the circle, the Indiana softball team defeated Troy, 3-2, in nine innings of action at the Messer Athletic Fields in Tallahassee, Fla. In its second extra-innings contest in as many games, the Hoosiers improved to 2-0 in pool play at the Florida State Invitational.
With the win, Indiana improved to 7-8-1 on the season, while Troy fell to 11-12 on the year.
Troy jumped out-front first, scoring twice in the first inning off a pair of hits. The Hoosiers, however, remained sharp and dismissed two of the final three batters to close the frame.
The Hoosier excitement began with Bogado in the bottom of the first. Bogado sent her second pitch of the game past the left-field fence for her second home run of the year. Senior center fielder Kim Richards then lined out to short to end the frame with IU trailing 2-1.
Bogado then turned up the heat in the circle, dictating every move by the Troy batters and fanning 12 through five innings. Bogado finished with a game-high 17 punchouts.
The defensive hold opened the door for the Hoosiers who loaded the bases in the fourth and fifth innings. Troy, however, stranded all three runners in the fourth, but was not as lucky in the fifth.
Indiana loaded the bases in their half of the fifth on a single by senior right fielder Lauren Hines (2-for-5) and first baseman junior Rachel Terry (4-for-4) and a walk by sophomore designated hitter Anna Olson. Sophomore Abby Page pinch ran for Hines and scored on a single by freshman shortstop Stephanie Pellerito to tie the game, 2-2. Terry looked to advance to third off Pellerito's shot to left field, but was thrown out to end the inning.
"The coaches really mentally prepared us for this weekend," Terry said. "The preparation helped us just attack every pitch and be confident. I felt comfortable at the plate today and just capitalized on my chances."
Neither team threatened another run the remainder of regulation, sending the game into extra innings.
It took until the ninth inning before Indiana made its move. With IU's fastest legs on the roster, sophomore left fielder Julia Hamilton, on second due to the international tie-breaker rule, Bogado stepped to the plate. Bogado, on the third pitch of the count, punted a slow rolling shot towards third. The hit proved just enough to garner Bogado a ticket to first, but the senior continued through the base path. Startling the covering defensive glove at first, Bogado advanced and reached second off an error on the throw. The error gave time for Hamilton to score and seal the 3-2 victory.
The Hoosiers continue action at the Florida State Invitational with a 12:30 p.m. matchup on March 11 against Appalachian State. Bracket play begins at 3:30 p.m. Indiana currently stands in first in pool C and has sealed a berth in the gold bracket with its opponent still to be determined by tomorrow's results.
