The Indiana baseball team is in Bradenton, Fla., on its spring trip. IU will play seven games in seven days. Catcher Bobby Segal is on the trip and will keep a daily journal on IUHOOSIERS.com. Below is Segal's second entry.
DAY 3
Last night we all watched the Sebastian Telfair movie that has been on every commercial for about a month now. I am glad the hype did not let us down as it was a great movie. So Trevor McConnell asks when I wanted to get up, so I told him 9:45. So 9:00 comes by and all of the sudden I hear his horrible alarm go off in the living room. I had to make sure the young bucks were up, so I woke up Herv and Boom Boom as well. We all sort of laid in bed for a little longer and then got ready to leave for breakfast. We wore our red shorts and red shirts to an early lunch at the IMG dining hall and ate once again poolside. I never eat a lot before a game, but I went ahead and made a turkey sandwich with cheese and tomato. I had a banana, some jello and lemon lime sports drink. It was back in the vans and to the condos for a few before heading over to the fields. We came back and watched Cold Pizza and ESPN. I saw I had a voicemail and it was my mom reminding me to call my grandparents to wish them a happy 56th anniversary, so I talked to them for a few minutes.
It was now 12:45 and we were off to the field for batting practice and pre-game before our game against Northern Iowa. We had Josh Lewis on the mound, and we seemed to be focused and ready to start a fresh week after the disappointing loss yesterday. There were a few opportunities early that we needed to execute but could not get the job done. Josh kept us close the entire game and was a teacher at the blackboard as he threw a 127-pitch gem. There were solid performances from two other senior captains, Jay Brant and Reggie Watson, and Jon Fixler came up with a huge defensive play followed by a double off the wall that I felt gave the team a lot of momentum. Later we executed a few bunts by Jay and Andrew Means, stole a base or two and were on our way to a 3-1 victory. It was a great game and will hopefully get the wheels going for the rest of the week.
We came back to Shorewalk and Skip said he would have tickets for those of us who did not have family in town and wanted to go to the Reds vs. Twins game at Ed Smith Stadium. About eight of us jumped in vans and went to the game and met up with Skip's kids and went and sat in the left-field bleachers. The game started off quick with a lead-off triple, and it was great to watch the pros play. The way they kept their hands back and how quick and long through the ball they were. There were some great defensive plays as well, but we had to leave after the sixth inning because we have an early game tomorrow. Jack (Skip's youngest son) was determined to get a foul ball down the line from Quinton McCracken, so I put him on my shoulders and he yelled as loud as he could. All he got in return was a smile and a head nod.
I walked in the condo with Trevor, Herv on his laptop listening to some east coast rap, Boom Boom on his laptop and empty pizza boxes from Domino's laying around. I was wondering why Joe had his fleece warm-up suit on laying on the couch, but when I looked at the thermostat, he had put it down to 50 degrees again. No wonder why I keep waking up in the mornings thinking I have come down with a cold. Thanks Vicini. We have an early game against Bradley tomorrow, so I better eat the leftover pizza of Joe's and go to bed.
