Hoosiers Fall Late to Stetson, 2-1

DELAND, Fla. - The Indiana softball team dropped a tight affair to Stetson, 2-1, at the Stetson Fastpitch Field on March 15. Indiana allowed a run in the bottom of the fifth in falling to the Hatters. The Hoosiers fall to 11-9-1 with the loss, while Stetson improves to 20-4.
Stetson took the lead in the bottom of the second with a run. Nicole Forbes singled up the middle before Lindsay Wightman singled through the left side to advance Forbes to second. After a pair of outs, Carrie Cruit singled to load the bases for the Hatters. With the sacks loaded, Shawna Wiggs walked to bring in the first run of the game.
An inning later, IU pulled even with the Hatters via a single by senior Mariangee Bogado. After freshman Sarah Padove reached on an error, sophomore Julia Hamilton reached on an error by the third baseman advancing Padove to second. Bogado followed with the tying single up the center to even the game, 1-1. It was Bogado's seventh RBI of the season.
The Hoosiers had an opportunity to take the advantage in the top of the third as sophomore Jennilee Huddleston was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs, senior Lauren Hines lined out to second base.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Hatters claimed the lead for good. Wiggs reached on a bunt single before advancing to second on an error by Huddleson at third base. With Andrea Migliori on first and Wiggs on second, Forbes singled to left field to drive in the eventual game-winning run.
The Hoosiers had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh after Padove doubled to center field to lead off the inning. After a pair of outs, Bogado singled to center, but pinch runner freshman Julie DiNallo could not score. Huddleson grouded out to end the contest.
Senior pitcher Megan Roark threw an impressive game on the mound for the Hoosiers. She finished with two strikeouts, while allowing seven hits and only one run.
Indiana will play Liberty at 4 p.m. in Deland, Fla., on March 16, 2006. The Hoosiers return to the Hoosier state to face Ball State on March 22, at 3 p.m., in Muncie, Ind.
