DELAND, Fla. - Despite a gutsy performance from senior pitcher Mariangee Bogado, the Indiana softball team fell to 11-10-1 after dropping its final spring break contest, 3-1, to Liberty on March 16 at the Stetson Softball Field in Deland, Fla. IU outhit the Flames, 8-5, but a three-run third inning by Liberty sealed the loss for the Hoosiers.
Indiana jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning as Bogado drove one down the right field line and advanced to second to second as the ball got passed the Liberty leftfielder. Sophomore Jennilee Huddleston followed with a RBI double just over third base, allowing Bogado to score from second to give Indiana a 1-0 edge.
Liberty answered and clinched the game in the bottom of the third. The Flames plated three runs off three hits and one error.
Bogado suffered the loss despite giving up only three runs on five hits in three innings of action to drop her record to 6-4. Additionally, the Mariana, Venezuela product added eight more Ks to her record. Senior Megan Roark took to the hill in the fourth inning and pitched three scoreless innings of work striking out six of the 10 batters she faced.
At the plate, the Hoosiers collected eight hits. Bogado and fellow-senior Lauren Hines each recorded a pair of hits, while Hamilton, Huddleston, freshmen Stephanie Pellerito and Sarah Padove carded one.
After being away from home for eight contests, the Hoosiers return to Indiana to face in-state foe Ball State in Muncie, Ind., on Wednesday, March 22 at 3 p.m.
