DAYTONA, Fla. - The Indiana men's tennis team completed a perfect spring break trip with a 5-2 victory over Central Florida on March 18. Despite losing the doubles point, Indiana claimed five of the six singles spots to post the victory. The Hoosiers improved to 10-6 on the season.
"We didn't play our best tennis on Saturday, but the guys found a way to grind out a victory with our play in singles," Indiana head coach Ken Hydinger said. "The conditions were tough with the courts and the wind. Our guys are starting to get a feel for what it takes to win. We are playing hard and with a lot of energy. It was a very productive week for us."
The Golden Knights claimed the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots. The lone victory for IU came at the No. 3 position. Senior Neil Kenner and sophomore Michael McCarthy bumped their season mark to 3-2 as a pair with an 8-5 win over Jimmy Roesch and Brock Sakey.
Sophomore Dara McLoughlin improved his season-long winning streak to seven matches with a straight-sets victory over Norman Alcantara at the No. 3 singles spot. The Dublin, Ireland native ran through his Golden Knight competition, 6-3, 6-2, to up his season record to 16-11. The seven-match winning streak is the longest for any Hoosier this season.
Like McLoughlin, junior Arnaud Roussel completed a perfect spring break trip with a straight-sets victory at the No. 6 singles slot. Roussel defeated Roesch, 6-2, 6-4, to push his season mark to 7-5.
The Hoosiers claimed the top two singles position as well in straight sets. Senior Dmytro Ishtuganov improved to 15-11 at the top spot with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sinan Sudas. At No. 2, junior David Bubenicek won his second straight match and pushed his record to 16-7 on the year with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Sebastian Delgado. Kenner rounded out the Hoosier points in singles with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Sakey at the No. 4 position. The win pushed Kenner's overall ledger to 11-9 and mark his second consecutive victory.
Indiana returns to Bloomington for a March 25 match. The Hoosiers will host Vincennes at noon.
