BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana head coach Katie Weismiller and the volleyball team announced the spring schedule recently. Overall, the Hoosiers play in four tournaments throughout April, while hosting a pair of Spring Flings on April 1 and April 15. Weismiller sat down with IUHOOSIERS.com to talk about the spring schedule and how spring practice is going.
On spring training:
KW: I would say the team is working extremely hard. We had great individual sessions where we have worked on skill sets for 30 minutes a day. We really worked on getting the most out of those 30 minutes. Everybody walked away from that improved. We have started team practices, and you can see it starting to come together. In particular, Erica Short and Emily Zulauf have really benefited from having individual time on the outside. You can see those two players starting to hit their stride. I would say across the board on defense and passing, we are having more people be able to handle the ball and that is a huge plus.
On the importance of playing spring matches:
KW: The spring schedule is an indicator of how we are doing. We use it more as a learning tool. We absolutely want to win matches. To say that we don't want to win is a misstatement. We always compete to win, but it is also an opportunity to see people in different positions. We aren't playing with a full roster compared to what we would be playing with in the fall. Our seniors no longer play and we don't have the availability of the incoming freshmen. Sometimes you have to put people in different positions, but it gives you an opportunity to give them chances against some of the top teams in the country.
On how she feels the team is reacting to upcoming competition:
KW: I am really excited to open up at home and get a feel for our team. Every spring will look completely different from your fall. We have a lot of energy and excitement right now. We have people working hard. If we go in with the attitude that we have to out-work the opponent, we are going to be in a lot better shape. Just to step out on the court on the first date will be nice. We also finish up the spring season with a big tournament in Aurora, Ill. We have Arizona, North Carolina, Texas, LSU and most all of the Big Ten teams there. The competition is probably the best for us at that tournament. Hopefully, by then, we will have put everything together and see how we play with each other.
