BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Mike Muehling, who spent the 2005 Indiana football season as the Hoosiers' quality control graduate assistant, has been promoted to defensive graduate assistant, IU head coach Terry Hoeppner announced on March 23. In his new position, Muehling will have on-field coaching responsibilities, and he will assist Brian George with the Hoosiers' defensive line.
A 2001 Bloomington High School South graduate who earned all-conference honors at defensive tackle and helped the Panthers to one state title and one sectional final finish, Muehling was also a four-year letterwinner on the defensive line at Lindenwood (Mo.) University. Muehling helped Lindenwood to the 2004 Heart of America Conference title, and he was named a Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete. Muehling graduated cum laude in May 2005 with a bachelor's degree in athletic training.
Muehling is following in the footsteps of his father, Jim, on the IU staff. Jim Muehling served 16 years in the Hoosier program as linebackers coach, defensive tackles coach and recruiting coordinator from 1980-96.
Muehling feels that his long affiliation with the Hoosier program will pay dividends in his current role.
"I'm just extremely happy to continue the family tradition and coach at the same school my dad was at for 16 years," Muehling said. "I absolutely loved the program growing up, and I would love to be a part of the program getting back to a bowl game."
Hoeppner feels that Muehling's playing experience and Hoosier ties make a great fit.
" I feel it's always good to promote from within if you can, and we are fortunate to have someone with Mike's intelligence and experience as a defensive lineman that we can promote," Hoeppner said. "His passion for IU football is another reason he is the best man for this job."
