BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore defensive lineman Greg Brown is excited to be back on the field and is ready for the chance to improve every day. Brown started four of the 11 games in which he played last fall, and he is looking to build on his early success.
"Right now we aren't in pads." Brown said. "We are just going through the basics, going through the plays. It has been a year since we have gone through the plays. We are just trying to get the feel back that we had last year when we were playing every day. We are just easing into it and adapting as we go."
After getting his first taste of playing time last year, Brown is eager to improve so he and the rest of the defensive unit can continue to make progress under second-year head coach Terry Hoeppner. The Hoosiers' offseason conditioning program addressed the team's size and quickness.
"We are going to continue to come out and play hard every day," Brown said. "There are going to be some changes made from year to year, but we aren't going to change the way we come out and play hard to get ready."
Brown isn't particular about where he practices, just so he has a chance to get out and improve his game.
"It doesn't matter to me if we practice inside Mellencamp Pavilion or outside Memorial Stadium," Brown said. "Practice is practice. You practice and work to get better, regardless if it is on the turf, on the game field or even on the pavement. You get better when you practice and I have no preference where we practice."
Maximum effort is the defense's main goal.
"Our goals defensively are to just play hard," Brown said. "We want all 11 of us to run hard to the ball on every play, not just sometimes. The only way we are going to be successful is if we have guys working hard and running to the ball every play."
