Pardy Named Western Division Player of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior attacker Janis Pardy earned the first Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division Player of the Week honor of her career, the conference office announced on March 23. She became the second Hoosier to earn the distinction this season after leading No. 17 IU to its second straight CWPA Western Division title with a 6-4 victory over then-No. 15 Michigan.
"I think it is more of an award for Janis' consistency," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "We have needed her and asked her to be a consistent leader and that is exactly what she has given us. I think this is an indication of the very solid leadership she has demonstrated in the pool."
In the weekend opener against Michigan for the regular-season championship and the No. 1 seed in the Western Division Championship, Pardy notched a pair of goals, including the eventual game-winner in the third period. It was the second time in as many years that Pardy doomed the Wolverines for the regular season crown. In 2005, she scored on a lob shot with 54 seconds remaining in the sudden victory period to give IU a 7-6 win over the Maize and Blue.
In the Hoosiers' 10-9 victory over then-No. 17 Cal State-Northridge at the Wolverine Invitational on March 18, Pardy notched her seventh career hat trick. It was her fifth three-goal game of the season as the Hoosiers picked up their second straight victory over a ranked opponent. After starting the season 0-7 against ranked foes, Pardy led the team to victories over Michigan and Northridge, their first wins over ranked opponents in 2006. By virtue of those victories, the Hoosiers ran their winning streak to nine matches, which tied the second-longest streak in school history.
Pardy also scored a pair of goals in the Hoosiers 13-7 win over Cal Baptist on March 19. The goals brought her season total to 33 and gave her 90 for her Hoosier career. She became the 11th IU player to accomplish the feat.
The Calgary, Alberta, Canada native joined junior attacker Brooke Zimmerman in earning the distinction this season. Zimmerman earned the honor on Feb. 23 after leading the Hoosiers to a 3-1 mark at the Princeton Invitational.
Indiana will next host the Fluid Five Challenge March 25-26, at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. It will be the first home matches of the season for IU. On March 25, IU will play No. 16 Michigan for the third time this season at 7:30 p.m. It will also be Senior Night as five IU players (Courtney Livak, Bridget McKeon, Clare Meadows, Pardy and Katie Parrish) will be recognized for their contributions to the program. On March 26, the Hoosiers will close out the challenge with matches against Wagner at 9 a.m. and Marist at 11 a.m.
