Hoosiers Open Spring with a Draw

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana men's soccer team opened the 2006 spring schedule with a 1-1 draw against defending NAIA Champion Lindsey Wilson. Junior captain and defender Julian Dieterle scored a second-half goal to pull the Hoosiers even in the matchup with the Blue Raiders.
"We have had a depleted crew due to injuries," Indiana head coach Mike Freitag said. "I was proud of the team that took the field considering it was their first time playing outside competition. It was a good challenge and a fair result against a quality team. I was pleased with the leadership our captains, Josh (Tudela) and Julian, displayed."
Lindsey Wilson scored a goal late in the opening half to take a 1-0 lead into the locker room. The Hoosiers battled back in the second before Dieterle found the back of the net to even the contest. After not scoring a goal during the fall season, the Elgin, Ill., native notched his first goal of the spring. Freshman Brad Ring's play at the defensive midfield position stood out to Frietag.
"I thought Brad Ring was outstanding on the day," Freitag said. "He showed why he is so highly regarded. At the end of the day, he always makes a lot of good things happen for his team."
The Hoosiers will continue their spring schedule on Friday, March 31, against Cincinnati. The game will be part of the Midwest Soccer Coaches Symposium and will be played at 7:30 p.m., on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium. In an interesting side note to the matchup, IU freshman Ofori Sarkodie will see a familiar face across the field in his brother, Kwame, who is a senior starter for the Bearcats.
