BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Matt Mayberry was one of the most highly-recruited football players in the Midwest last fall as a senior at Hinsdale (Ill.) South High School. After committing to Indiana last August, the all-state fullback, middle linebacker and strong safety rushed for 2,242 yards and 36 touchdowns to help the Hornets to a 10-2 finish.
While Mayberry is a key component of IU's 2006 signing class, the best news for Hoosier fans is that Mayberry refuses to rest on his laurels. He visited Indiana's March 30 spring practice, and he spoke with IUHOOSIERS.COM about his next four years in Bloomington.
"My main objective right now is to get bigger, stronger and faster," the 6-2, 211-pound Mayberry said. "My goal is to come into camp at 220, and keep my (4.3 40-yard dash time) speed. If I do that, I'll be in good shape."
Indiana head coach Terry Hoeppner is pleased with Mayberry's progress report.
"Take one look at Matt and you can see that he has not been lying around. He has been in the weight room, and it shows you how focused he is," Hoeppner said. "We're trying to get the most athletic players on the field and put them in a position where they can have success. What we're doing on defense really suits his strength."
According to Mayberry, the Hoosier program is an ideal fit.
"The coaching staff definitely made the difference," Mayberry said. "The coaching staff is something special, and Coach Hoeppner is someone special. My recruiting coach, Coach (Bill) Lynch, he did the best job recruiting me. It got personal with Coach Lynch. I got close to him, and that had a lot to do with it."
