ERIE, Pa. - The No. 19 Indiana women's water polo completed a six-match sweep of the weekend with a pair of wins on March 5. The Hoosiers notched a 14-6 win over Mercyhurst to open the day before dominating Penn State-Behrend, 13-4, in the final match of the weekend. With the victories, the Hoosiers pushed their season mark to 11-7 overall and 6-0 in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division.
"I felt like we received a good team effort throughout the weekend," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "It was nice to see the team in good spirits and happy for one another. Our bench was excited and cheering for their teammates. It is always a positive and an important factor for success to have a team gel as a unit both in and out of the pool."
Against the Lakers of Mercyhurst, junior Brooke Zimmerman recorded her second hat trick of the week and fifth of the season to lead the Hoosier offensive charge. Senior Janis Pardy, sophomore Brittany Estrada and freshman Maggie Hannon each notched a pair of tallies in the victory. Junior Kara Woolley led the IU defensive attack with four steals.
In the second game of the day and sixth of the weekend, the Hoosiers rolled through the Behrend Lions as a pair of IU rookies racked up their first career hat tricks. Freshman Stefanie Winter scored the first three goals of her Indiana career. Fellow classmate Hannon notched her second multigoal game of the day and the first hat trick of her young career.
"Maggie Hannon had a really good day on Sunday," King said. "She has shown signs of growing and developing as a player. Maggie is learning to take advantage of her natural skills."
Junior Jaclyn Tameris and freshman Martha Schuessler added two goals in the win over Penn State-Behrend. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Larson bettered her career high in saves for the second straight day. The Houston, Texas native notched eight blocks against the Behrend Lions.
The Hoosiers will have two weeks off before returning to the pool. Indiana will look to capture its second straight CWPA Western Division regular season championship when it battles Michigan on Friday, March 17, at 7:30 p.m., in Ann Arbor, Mich. Both teams are 6-0 in the Western Division, and last season, IU defeated Michigan, 7-6, in sudden victory on a goal by senior Janis Pardy to claim the program's first regular season division title. IU will then compete in the Wolverine Invitational, March 18 and 19.
