Hoosiers Travel to Terre Haute to Face Sycamores

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Wrapping up its season-opening, seven-game road trip, the Indiana baseball team battles Indiana State on March 7 at Sycamore Field in Terre Haute, Ind. The Sycamore enter Tuesday's contest with a 4-4 mark overall and riding a three-game winning streak. IU (0-6) is in search of its first victory of the season after playing preseason Atlantic 10 favorite Charlotte and No. 24 Miami (Fla.).
Inside Indiana State
Indiana State took a pair at Southeast Missouri State (8-1, 10-6 (11)) on March 3-4 and dropped Southeast Louisiana, 15-5, in the weekend finale on March 5.
ISU holds a .296 team average and is scoring six runs per game. Six Sycamores are hitting better than .300, highlighted by lead-off man Tim Brewer's .371 mark. The senior outfielder leads the team with six stolen bases, two triples and13 hits and is second on the club with six runs scored.
Junior catcher Kyle Kolb leads the power attack, posting a pair of home runs, eight RBI and a .688 slugging percentage in four contests.
Right-hander Ryan Tatusko will start Tuesday's matchup. The sophomore is 0-1 on the season and holds a 2.51 ERA. Tatusko has started two games and pitched 14 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs with seven strikeouts and three walks. Overall, the Sycamore staff owns a 3.01 ERA in 71 2/3 innings of work.
Series History
This is the 73rd meeting between the two schools. Indiana holds a 40-32 lead in the all-time series, including sweeping both contests between the schools last season. The Hoosiers pulled out a 5-4 win in Millington, Tenn., on Feb. 25, and earned a 6-4 victory in Bloomington on April 6.
Last Season Against The Sycamores
Trailing by three runs heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Indiana rallied with four runs in the final three innings to down Indiana State, 5-4, at the Service Academy Classic on Feb. 25. Jay Brant scored the winning run after senior Corby Heckman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Steve Nielsen earned the victory, holding ISU scoreless in 1 2/3 innings of work while striking out three batters.
The Hoosiers scored in each of the opening four frames and downed Indiana State for the second time in 2005, 6-4, on April 6.
Indiana notched single runs in the first, second and third before adding a three-spot to their tally in the fourth. Joe Kemp led the Cream and Crimson, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Ryan Parker and Josh Richardson each added a pair of hits, while Parker, Corby Heckman and Kurt Weigle added an RBI apiece.
Brad Davidson earned the win for the Hoosiers. Over three innings, Davidson struck out two, allowing only one run on three hits. Joe Trucchio picked up the save, pitching two perfect innings to close the game out.
