BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana women's tennis player junior Laura McGaffigan became the second Hoosier this season to earn Big Ten Player of the Week honors as announced by the conference office on March 8.
McGaffigan notched her first victory over a ranked opponent this season and the second of her career after easily defeating No. 56 Caitlin Collins at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2, against No. 6 North Carolina on March 4. In the Hoosiers Big Ten opener against Penn State on March 5, the Bettendorf, Iowa product picked up two more wins. She teamed with senior Sarah Batty at No. 1 doubles, and helped the Hoosiers claim the doubles point with an 8-4 victory. At No. 2 singles, McGaffigan topped Andreea Niculescu 7-6, 6-2 to improve her singles record to 10-4 this season.
The honor is the first of McGaffigan's career and the second for Indiana this season. Batty won the award on Feb. 15 after her performance against Marquette, DePaul and Butler. So far this season, IU has received more weekly accolades than any other conference team
