BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana is midway through its spring drills, and head coach Terry Hoeppner sat down with IUHOOSIERS.COM to talk about his team's progress through its first seven practices as well as his goals and objectives for the remaining eight practices.
Overall thoughts:
TH: "I like the way our defense is playing. I like some of the adjustments and things we have done. We have some young guys stepping up and playing well. But we need other guys to step up. Our scrimmages will be an extension of what we do on the practice field. Can you make these plays at the end of (an opponent's) 12-play drive, and can we sustain it on offense?"
On the offensive performance:
TH:"We have too much talent on the offensive side of the play to not make any plays. Some of them have left me impressed and depressed. We need consistency. It's not a game of perfect, but we still need to be consistent."
On being patient during spring season:
TH:"You have to be careful with that. It would be easy to give up hope. We have some young guys coming in but we've got to make sure our returning players are ready to step up and play to the best of their ability. I don't think you can ever afford to be impatient. You can challenge them."
On the team's strengths and areas to address:
TH:"It's a give and take. I'm happy with the way the defense is playing, and we just need more consistency on offense. The scrimmages will be a good test of physical and mental endurance. We have had a lot of good drill work, and there is a degree of improvement at almost every position."
Indiana will continue workouts April 2, April 4 and April 6 in preparation for the April 8 Pancakes 'n' Pigskins scrimmage. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m., as adults can purchase pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee for $5, and kids 12 and under can buy breakfast for $3.
The Kids Zone is back for its second straight Pancakes 'n' Pigskin and features various interactive inflatables and other activities.
Admission to the 10 a.m. intrasquad scrimmage is free and includes a halftime talk with Coach Hoeppner and player and coach autograph session on the field after the scrimmage.
IU's 2006 spring season concludes with the annual Cream and Crimson intra squad game on April 15 at 4 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
IU season ticket holders will also have the opportunity to renew their season tickets before the April 17 priority deadline to save 10 percent off the price of an adult ticket. Please call 855-4006 or 866-IUSPORTS for more information.
