Campillo Named IU Athlete of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending April 9, freshman golfer Jorge Campillo earned the honor after leading the Indiana men's golf team to the Boilermaker Invitational title.
Campillo captured individual honors by eight strokes at the Kampen Course (7,083 yards, par 72) in West Lafayette, Ind.
IU finished the tournament at 882 (301-287-294) for its first title since the 2004 Xavier Invitational, finishing 14 shots better than second-place Purdue (310-288-298) and 18 strokes ahead of third-place Notre Dame (307-300-293).
Campillo claimed his first career title and became the first Hoosier to win a tournament since PGA Tour member Jeff Overton claimed medalist honors at the 2005 Big Ten Championships (May 6-8). Additionally, he is the first true freshman to win an event since current assistant coach Josh Brewer won at the 1995 Legends Intercollegiate.
Campillo capped a remarkable tournament with a spectacular 68 for a 4-under 212 total. The Caceres, Spain native opened with a 74 before posting a 2-under 70 in round two and the lowest round in the 72-player field in the third and final round.
Campillo earned the IU Athlete of the Week honor from a list of deserving student-athletes. The list of nominees included: Senior Mariangee Bogado (softball), freshman Sigrid Fischer (women's tennis), junior Courtney Johnson (women's outdoor track and field), senior Ryan Ketchum (men's outdoor track and field), junior Melissa Soria (water polo) and the First Varsity 8 Shell (rowing).
Hoosier Honor Roll
Senior Mariangee Bogado (softball):
Recorded a stellar weekend for the Hoosiers in the circle and from the plate. Against two of the Big Ten's best, No. 12 Michigan and Michigan State, who is undefeated in conference games, Bogado fanned a total of 28 batters through 21 2/3 innings of action. The Mariana, Venezuela native also went a combined 6-for-13 from the plate, registering two doubles in the process.
Freshman Sigrid Fischer (women's tennis):
Led the No. 30 Hoosiers to their 15th victory of the season against No. 68 Ohio State on April 9. Fischer topped Ciara Finucane at the No. 4 slot, 6-2, 6-3. Fischer and doubles partner sophomore Brianna Williams defeated Sonia Ruzimovsky and Angela DiPastina, 8-3 in the No. 2 position. Fischer currently leads IU in singles wins with 16.
Junior Courtney Johnson (women's outdoor track and field):
Ran an impressive time of 13.38 in the 100m hurdles at the Indiana Relays. She met the NCAA regional standard and bested her previous career best en route to the title in the event.
Senior Ryan Ketchum (men's outdoor track and field):
Earned two NCAA provisional marks in his events at the Indiana Relays. He took home the shot put title with a heave of 18.02m and then finished third in the discus with a mark of 52.17m.
Junior Melissa Soria (water polo):
Helped the Hoosiers to a 3-1 mark at the UC-Davis Shootout. At the event, the Villa Park, Calif., native scored 11 goals on 21 shots, including a trio of hat tricks. The hat tricks brought her season total to seven, while she also became the third Hoosier to move past the 40-goal mark. Soria has 43 goals on the season.
First Varsity 8 Shell (rowing):
During Saturday's competition at Eagle Creek the first varsity 8 team of junior Betsy Hibbard (cox), senior Ashley Airis (stroke), senior Elisabeth Benoit, senior Laura Lazaridis, junior Laura Stebbins, junior Courtney Valerious, junior Rozzie McHenry, junior Colleen Ryan and junior Elaine Deppe (bow) cruised into second place with a time of 6:16.7, while No. 11 Notre Dame took first in 6:11.0 and Purdue finished third in 6:59.5. Additionally, the squad went on to tie the school record of head-to-head victories with eight set last season by placing second in 7:05.6, while defending national champion California raced to first in 6:54.2 and Purdue took third in 7:26.1.
