BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Under beautiful skies at Indiana's Memorial Stadium, the Hoosiers capped their spring campaign with the annual Cream and Crimson intrasquad scrimmage on April 15. Led by a pair of touchdown receptions from sophomore James Bailey and seven completions for 289 yards and three touchdowns from junior Blake Powers, the Cream squad prevailed, 31-27.
The two squads played impressively on offense, combining for over 700 yards of total offense and eight touchdowns in the contest, including four touchdown receptions of 60 yards or more.
Senior Kenny Kendal opened the scrimmage with his first of two sacks for the Crimson squad. Two plays later, Powers found senior Jahkeen Gilmore on a 43-yard pass, but it was the Crimson defense that prevailed in the first series, forcing the Cream to settle for a Kevin Truelock 32-yard field goal.
The Crimson squad found the end zone on the next series. Senior Graeme McFarland ignited the scoring drive by hitting senior Lance Bennett on a 50-yard pass. McFarland continued to make things happen for the Crimson when he called his own number for the first touchdown of the scrimmage, giving the Crimson the 7-3 advantage.
The Cream answered on the next drive with a 60-yard pass from Powers to Bailey to put the Cream up 10-7.
The Crimson would not stay behind for long as McFarland hit freshman Chris Banks on an 80-yard pass on the first play of the drive. At the end of the first quarter, the Crimson led, 14-10.
Junior Charles Emerson added rushing yards to his day's totals when he recovered a botched snap for the 23-yard touchdown to give the Crimson the 20-10 lead.
The Cream cut into the Crimson's lead when McFarland connected with Gilmore on a 33-yard pass for his first receiving touchdown of the game. The Hoosiers entered the locker room with the Crimson leading the Cream, 20-17.
The offensive show continued in the second half when the Crimson increased their lead to 10 after Burns posted a four-yard touchdown run, capping a 13-play, 80-yard scoring drive.
To open the fourth quarter, the Cream tightened the score to 27-24 after Powers hit redshirt freshman Andrew Means on a 76-yard bomb.
Powers repeated his performance the next time the Cream had the ball. The Brandenburg, Ky., product connected with Bailey on an 84-yard completion for Bailey's second score of the scrimmage, resulting in the final score.
The Hoosiers will now make preparations for the start to the 2006 campaign, with the opening contest coming on Sept. 2 against Western Michigan at Memorial Stadium.
