EVANSTON, Ill. - The Indiana softball team fell to No. 17 Northwestern in the second game of the series, 11-1, at Sharon J. Drysdale Field in Evanston, Ill. Senior designated player Mariangee Bogado led the offense with a solo home run, while senior pitcher Megan Roark fanned four in the complete-game effort.
With the loss, Indiana fell to 20-19-1 and 3-7 in Big Ten action, while Northwestern improved to 28-10 and 8-2 in league affairs.
Roark opened the game in the circle for the Hoosiers and could not have asked for a better start. Through one round of the Wildcat batting lineup and three innings of work, Roark suffocated Northwestern, denying a hit through three and allowing only two to reach base courtesy of walks in the second inning.
For the Hoosiers at the plate, Indiana recorded a hit in the second frame by junior first baseman Rachel Terry, and freshman second baseman Sarah Padove reached after being hit by a pitch. Both opportunities for the Hoosiers fell short as the game remained tied, 0-0, going into the top of the fourth.
Midway through the contest, Northwestern opened the scoring gates with four in the top of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. With another run in the fifth, the Wildcats defended a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.
With the top of the lineup at bat, Bogado checked in at the plate for the Hoosiers. Working a full count, the Mariara, Venezuela native waited for her pitch before roping a homer over the center field wall. The blast put IU on the board, 5-1. Padove followed with a single through the left side to give IU a base runner and no outs. Northwestern, however, escaped the inning with back-to-back fly outs to right field and a strikeout to end the frame.
The Wildcats finished up the game with six runs in the top of the sixth to take an 11-1 lead, putting the contest out of reach for the Hoosiers.
Indiana wraps up its Big Ten weekend in Champaign, Ill., with a doubleheader against the Illinois Fighting Illini on April 16. Game times are set for noon and 2 p.m. (CT).
