No. 35 Hoosiers Blank Minnesota

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 35 Indiana women's tennis team improved to 16-5 overall and 6-1 in the Big Ten with a 7-0 win over Minnesota on April 15 at the Varsity Tennis Courts. The Hoosiers claimed the doubles point for the 17th time this season and swept the Gophers in all six singles contests. IU is a perfect 2-0 when playing outdoors.
"We wanted to come out of this match with a lot of confidence, and I think we accomplished that," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "Iowa is a tough team and tomorrow will be a good match."
Under the warm April sun, the Hoosiers jumped to the early 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point for the 17th time this season. Freshman Sigrid Fischer and Brianna Williams improved to 15-5 with a convincing 8-1 win over Minnesota's Mariana Spilca and Danielle Mousseau at the No. 2 position.
Freshman Marah Calvo and junior Cecile Perton followed suit with an 8-1 victory in the No. 3 slot over Jane Anderson and Marina Bugaenco to clinch the doubles point. Calvo and Perton are now 1-2.
The No. 57 pair of senior Sarah Batty and junior Laura McGaffigan topped Nischela Reddy and Ida Malmberg, 8-2 in the No. 1 spot to improve to 17-4 on the season.
In exhibition doubles play, freshmen Stephanie Heller and Alba Berdala defeated Jenna Tellefsen and Shelby Rohrer, 8-1.
The Hoosiers continued to dominate in singles by winning all six matches. Williams made short work of Mousseau at the No. 3 slot by a score of 6-3, 6-1. Williams is 12-7 on the season.
McGaffigan stepped off the court next and gave the Hoosiers the 3-0 lead in the match. McGaffigan defeated Malmberg, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to improve to 13-8. Fischer topped Spilca at the No. 4 position, 6-0, 6-2 to up her record to 17-4 on the season.
In her second-to-last home match as a Hoosier, Batty easily beat Reddy, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Heading into her final home contest, Batty is 13-8 at the No. 1 position.
At No. 6 singles, Perton won over Bugaenco, 6-1, 6-3 to improve to 14-6 this dual season, To complete the sweep, Berdala topped Anderson in a three-set match, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0(1). Berdala is 11-10 on the year.
Heller defeated Tellefsen, 6-1, 6-0 in exhibition singles play, while Calvo topped Rohrer, 6-0, 6-2.
The Hoosiers hit the court on Sunday, April 16 at 10 a.m., against No. 37 Iowa. Weather permitting, the match will be held at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
