BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - In an outburst of offense, the Indiana softball team stormed over IPFW, 11-3, in six innings at the IU Softball Field on April 18. In all, the Hoosiers out-hit the Mastodons, 11-5, and recorded two innings of four or more runs to topple IPFW.
With the win, Indiana improved to 21-20-1 on the season, while IPFW fell to 8-27 overall on the season.
Indiana wasted no time in jumping ahead on the scoreboard, registering six runs in the bottom of the first to take a 6-0 lead in the game. The Hoosier down pour came courtesy of four hits coupled with one error and two walks. In the frame, senior right fielder Lauren Hines, junior left fielder Heather Hohs and first baseman Rachel Terry, sophomore third baseman Jennilee Huddleston and freshmen second baseman Sarah Padove and shortstop Stephanie Pellerito all crossed the plate. Hines, Huddleston, Terry and Pellerito accounted for the hits. The Mastodons escaped the inning without any further damage off a groundout to third.
IPFW then slowed down the Indiana run, holding the Hoosiers scoreless through the next three innings, while scoring one in the top of the third to make it a 6-1 Indiana lead.
IU, however, would score again in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-1 lead off a hit by sophomore pinch hitter Kari Bettenbrock and a run by Terry. Terry advanced through the base path after a walk sent her to first, an error allowed her to advance to third and a sacrifice fly to left field brought her home.
On the day, IU took advantage of the Mastodon's sloppy fielding, accounting for six errors on IPFW for the game.
Indiana sealed the run-rule victory in the bottom of the sixth off four runs, four hits and two Mastodon errors. Senior pitcher Megan Roark tallied the win with nine strike outs in the performance, and allowed only one earned run.
On the day, Terry and Bettenbrock went a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate with two RBI and an RBI, respectively, while Hines chipped in a 3-for-4 with two RBI effort. Huddleston also had her way at the plate, going 2-for-4 on the day with two runs and one RBI.
Indiana continues its mid-week schedule with a game against Ohio University at 4 p.m., on April 19, in Athens, Ohio.
