BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana softball team tallied three runs in their half of the first and never looked back, defeating Wisconsin, 3-1, on April 21, at the IU Softball Field. With the win, Indiana snapped an eight-game losing streak in conference contests, and moved to 22-21-1 and 4-8 in the Big Ten.
The Hoosiers out-hit Wisconsin 6-1 behind an impressive one-hitter by senior pitcher Mariangee Bogado. The loss dropped the Badgers to 18-17 and 3-7 in the conference.
Bogado finished with five strikeouts in the performance, while junior first baseman Rachel Terry paced IU with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate.
It was all business at the ball park for the Hoosiers, as Indiana jumped on the board first with a three-run first inning. The Hoosiers were led in the bottom of the first with singles from Bogado, Terry and sophomore third baseman Jennilee Huddleston, while senior right fielder Lauren Hines and junior center fielder Kim Richards recorded doubles. With the Hoosiers' opening charge, Indiana took a 3-0 lead into the top of the second.
Wisconsin, however, could not break through Indiana's defense and solid pitching, going without a hit or a base runner through three innings.
The Badgers finally placed their first runner on base in the top of the fourth. The Wisconsin runner reached after being hit by a pitch, and proceeded to third on back-to-back sacrifice bunts. A hit in the inning cracked a no-hitter by Bogado, and drove in a run to put Wisconsin on the board, 3-1.
Indiana, after starting hot at the plate, relied on its suffocating infield to protect its two-run lead to seal a 3-1 victory.
With the win, Indiana recorded its first victory over the Badgers since 2004, snapping a three-game losing streak.
Indiana returns to the diamond for the second game of the series on Saturday, April 22, with first pitch set for noon.
