EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 40 Indiana women's tennis team topped Michigan State, 6-1, on April 6 at MSU's Varsity Tennis Courts. After claiming the doubles point and five of the six singles contests, IU improved to 17-6 overall and 7-2 in the Big Ten.
"The match started out close," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "We played much better in singles and pulled away. It was a good match in terms of buliding our confidence and getting another outdoor match in. We are going to have to play much better to get a win over Michigan tomorrow."
Indiana opened the match with a 1-0 advantage as it claimed the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches. Senior Sarah Batty and junior Laura McGaffigan defeated Christine Badger and Stephanie Andrews, 8-1, at the No. 1 slot.
The Spartans evened the score by claiming the No. 3 contest. Michigan State's Pascale Schnitzer and Anna Milosavjevic topped freshman Alba Berdala and junior Cecile Perton in a tight, 8-6 match.
Freshman Sigrid Fischer and sophomore Brianna Williams clinched the doubles point as they edged Jessica Baron and Stephanie Kebler, 8-4 at the No. 2 position.
Perton gave IU the 2-0 lead in the match with an easy 6-2, 6-0 win over Milosavjevic at the No. 6 position. Batty added to the Hoosiers' lead at the No. 1 slot by defeating Bader, 6-2, 6-2.
Schnitzer gave Michigan State its only point of the match at the No. 2 singles slot with a 7-5, 6-0 win over McGaffigan.
Berdala sealed the match for Indiana at the No. 5 slot as she defeated Andrews, 6-4, 6-2. Fischer added to IU's victory with a three-set win over Kebler in the No. 4 position, 6-3,1-6, 6-4. Williams gave the Hoosiers the 6-1 win by besting Baron in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0(5) at No. 3 singles.
Indiana will take on Michigan Sunday, April 23 at 11 a.m., in Ann Arbor, Mich.
