COLUMBUS, Ohio - Playing against some of its toughest competition this spring, the Indiana women's golf team finished play at the Ohio State Invitational with a final round 308, to finish in 13th overall with a 921 (306-307-308). The Hoosiers will now return home to host the 2006 Big Ten Championships at the IU golf course, April 28-30.
"I am extremely encouraged by our performance this weekend," Indiana head coach Clint Wallman said. "We had consistent play top to bottom and showed great balance. I think we are a solid Big Ten team and showed we can compete. We are looking forward to hosting the Big Ten Championships on our home course next weekend."
The Hoosiers were led during Sunday's final round by senior Shannon Johnson and sophomore Elaine Harris. Johnson entered tournament play ranked No. 41 in the nation, and led IU in 29th place overall with a 225 (73-75-76). Harris also continued her hot play, recording Indiana's low round on the tournament's final day with a 75, to finish tied for 35th with a 227 (75-77-75).
"I thought both played really solid," Wallman said. "Elaine had a great week and really proved she can play at the highest level. Shannon continues to play well as she has throughout the spring season, and she has the skills to go the distance."
Freshman Amber Lindgren closed play at the par-72, 6,177-yard Golf Club of Dublin, tied for 63rd with a 236 (78-79-79), while fellow classmate Tara Boone finished 65th with a 237 (79-80-78). Junior Jenny Kim rounded out the Hoosiers tied for 66th with a 238 (83-76-79).
In a field which featured seven of the nation's top-30 teams, No. 4 Auburn ran away with the tournament title, finishing 27 strokes ahead of second-place and No. 16-ranked Florida. The Tigers carded an 849 (288-280-281), while the Gators closed play with a 876 (289-295-292). No. 7 Purdue finished third overall with a 877 (287-296-294), while No. 20 Kent State (287-302-298/887) and tournament host No. 22 Ohio State (297-308-290/888) rounded out the top five, respectively.
The Big Ten Championships will be held on the IU Golf Course beginning with 36 holes on Friday, April 28, while 18 holes will be played on both Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30. Admission is free to the general public. For more information on the 2006 Big Ten Championships, go to iuhoosiers.com and click on the Big Ten Championships website link on the right-hand side.
