BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana baseball head coach Tracy Smith announced on April 24 that left-handed pitcher and first baseman Tom Devero has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend Indiana University beginning in the fall semester of 2006.
A 6-3, 210-pounder out of Palatine, Ill., Devero is a standout for head coach Paul Belo at Palatine High School. Thus far in 2006, the left-handed bat owns a .425 average with 19 RBI and a plus-.500 on-base percentage in 16 ballgames.
"Tom is a big, strong kid with a tremendous upside," Smith said. "He has been a standout in every sport he has played, and now that he will be focusing on baseball, it will be interesting to see how far he can go."
In 2005, the Daily Herald All-Area and Mid-Suburban League All-Conference selection batted .390 with four home runs, 30 RBI, two triples and a .610 slugging percentage. He also compiled a 6-3 record on the mound, carding a 3.36 ERA with three saves.
Following the season, Devero earned a spot on Team Illinois in the Midwest Classic and garnered a spot on the all-tournament teams at the Jack Kaiser Tournament and the Northwest Suburban Baseball Tournament.
In additions to his duties on the diamond, Devero played an integral role on Palatine's football (wingback, linebacker) and basketball teams.
Along with his accolades in the sporting arena, Devero has enjoyed success in the classroom. A honor roll student his sophomore and junior seasons, he attended the Mid-Suburban Conference Leadership Summit in the fall of 2004, netted a spot on the 2003 "A" team and captured the Pirate Pride Award in October of 2002.
Tom plans to study business at Indiana.
