BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With the NFL Draft scheduled for April 29-30, IUHOOSIERS.com will sit down with several of IU's pro prospects to talk about the draft process and what they have been doing to prepare for a professional career. Offensive lineman Isaac Sowells recently took time to share his experiences.
Sowells served as an anchor of the offensive line with 11 starts in 2005. In 2004, he started the first four games of 2004 before his year was cut short with a season-ending wrist injury. Sowells had been an anchor at the left tackle position having started 16 straight games before his injury. Sowells ranked second on the team in total snaps played as a sophomore in 2003. He was on the field for 967 snaps of game action as a sophomore, including a season-high 93 at Penn State. He played in all 12 games for the Hoosiers in 2002 and was listed as the second team left guard for each of those contests.
The Louisville, Ky., native saw 337 snaps of game action in 2002. He started the season only playing seven snaps against William & Mary, but saw that number increase throughout the year. He played a season-high 52 snaps against both Illinois and Michigan State. He also saw 51 snaps at Kentucky. He played in 20 or more snaps in eight of the 12 games.
What have you been doing since pro scout day?
IS: The only thing I have really been doing is working out early in the morning every day. I work out Monday through Friday, and pretty much chill on the weekend. I am just staying in shape to the best of my ability.
What teams have you been working out for?
IS: I have worked out for the Bears, Eagles and Jaguars.
What feedback have you received from your agent and scouts?
IS: I have a projection for this weekend, but that is not something I want to get into right now. I am just sitting here and waiting until this weekend. At the end of the day, it is just about sitting there and watching the draft, hoping your name will get called.
What plans do you have to watch the draft this weekend?
IS: I am just having a get together with my family at my mom's house. We are going to sit in front of the television and see what happens.
What one piece of advice would you give someone who will be going through this process next year?
IS: First off, you need to pick a good agent. You don't want to listen to all of that stuff on the Internet. As I have learned, and Victor Adeyanju will tell you, you never know where you will end up. You just have to stick to your diet and work out hard. You just have to wait it out. It is kind of weird, actually, because you don't know where you will end up. It is a completely different situation from a player's perspective than being a high school recruit. You just have to hope your name will be called and be patient.
