Batty Earns Unanimous All-Big Ten Nod

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Indiana women's tennis senior Sarah Batty earned All-Big Ten honors as announced by the conference on April 27. Batty, who also garnered the accolade last season, was a unanimous selection by the league's coaches. Additionally, the Chesterfield, England native took home the Sportsmanship Award for IU. Batty led the Hoosiers to a No. 4 seed at the championship along with a top-50 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) team ranking for the duration of the season.
"Sarah has been an outstanding captain for us," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "Her leadership on and off the court is one of the main reasons we have been successful this year."
Batty enters the 2006 Big Ten Championship with an overall record of 15-9 and a 6-4 mark in conference play at the Hoosiers' No. 1 singles position. A two-time Big Ten Player of the Week honoree (Feb. 15 and March 22), Batty knocked off one ranked opponent this dual season in DePaul's then-No. 85 Gergana Ganeva (6-4, 6-7, 10-6) on Feb. 12.
In doubles, Batty and partner junior Laura McGaffigan finished the regular season with a team-high 18-6 overall ledger and a 7-3 record in the Big Ten. IU's No. 1 doubles tandem topped Illinois' then-No. 37 team of Macall Harkins and Emily Wang, 8-5, on March 26 to highlight the conference slate. Prior to the dual season, Batty and McGaffigan competed in the prestigious ITA All-American Tournament in Pacific Palisades, Calif. (Oct. 6-9).
Batty and the Hoosiers will take on fifth-seeded Purdue in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Championship on Friday, April 28 at 10 a.m. (CT) at Illinois' Illini Grove Tennis Courts. Live match scoring will be available on Illinois' athletic website, fightingillini.com.
