BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Thanks in large part to a pair of top-10 finishes from sophomore Elaine Harris and senior Shannon Johnson, the Indiana women's golf team battled through tough weather conditions on its way to a sixth-place finish at the 2006 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships held at the Indiana University Golf Course.
This year's championships proved to be one of the best events in school history, as the Hoosiers' 72-hole 1,214 (300-292-301-321) ranked as the fifth-best four-round mark in IU lore. Indiana also made its way in the record books with the sixth-best 18-hole mark (292), seventh-best 36-hole mark (592) and fifth-lowest 54-hole mark (893) in program history.
"I feel we took a major step ahead for this program," Indiana head coach Clint Wallman said. "I am very proud of how the girls played this weekend. They learned that they can compete and know how to compete with some of the upper echelon teams in the Big Ten Conference. It is certainly something to build for the future."
For the third time this season, Harris led Indiana in a tournament. The San Francisco, Calif., native finished tied for sixth overall with a 295 (71-70-76-78) during the event. It marked her second top-10 finish this season. Johnson also had a stellar performance, finishing tied for eighth overall with a 298 (75-72-72-79).
Furthermore, Johnson, who entered the tournament as the nation's 43rd-ranked player, earned All-Big Ten First Team recognition, while Harris garnered Indiana's Sportsmanship nominee.
"I just can't say enough about Shannon," Wallman said. "She deserved a first team selection. I think she had an outstanding year and possibly one of best in school history. We are going to miss her. Aside from her performance week in and week out, she was a great leader and mentor for the girls. I also think Elaine picked up that baton and is carrying it forward. I really feel the future is very bright for these girls."
Freshman Tara Boone closed out her best weekend as a Hoosier, closing play with a 309 (74-77-75-83), which placed her in a tie for 28th overall. Junior Jenny Kim tied for 45th with a 317 (82-75-78-82), while senior Katie Carlson (80-82-81-82/325) and freshman Amber Lindgren (86-75-88-88/337) rounded out the Hoosier effort.
Northwestern's Alice Kim took home the individual medalist honor, closing with a three-over par 291 (68-72-74-77). Kim just edged Purdue's Maria Hernandez (72-73-74-73), Ohio State's Carling Coffing (72-74-72-75) and Michigan State's Sara Brown (72-73-71-76) by one stroke.
Purdue (1,179) claimed the Big Ten title, finishing six strokes ahead of second-place Ohio State (1,185). Michigan State finished third at 1,191, while Michigan (1,202) and Northwestern (1212) closed play just ahead of the Hoosiers.
With the season now complete, Johnson will wait and see if she is selected as an at-large competitor for the NCAA Regionals. The selection will be announced on Monday, May 1.
