BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending April 2, senior hurler Mariangee Bogado grabbed the distinction. Bogado is the second IU softball player to win the weekly honor, while the laurel is her second of the week after earning Big Ten Pitcher of the Week accolades. Bogado is recognized after leading the Hoosiers to a 3-1 Big Ten start, their best since opening 5-0 in 1997.
Indiana opened its conference slate with a two-game series against Ohio State on March 31-April 1, followed by a doubleheader against league-leading Penn State on April 2. The past week also included a doubleheader against regional rival Illinois-Chicago on March 29.
A strong performance from the senior hurler propelled the Hoosiers to a 5-1 performance over those six games. Bogado went 4-0 in five appearances in the circle, tallying 36 strikeouts over 29 1/3 innings of action. Bogado allowed only three earned runs through five games, giving the senior an impressive 0.72 ERA. On the season, Bogado boasts a 1.70 clip.
The Mariara, Venezuela native proved a pivotal component in the Hoosiers' 3-1 start in conference affairs, notching all three wins behind solid performances against some of the conference's best. The start included fanning 13 in the first game of a doubleheader against the Nittany Lions. On the season, Bogado has thrown six games with double-digit strikeouts.
The Hoosiers, behind the suffocating pitching of Bogado, were able to notch back-to-back 4-0 victories against PSU, while splitting the series against Ohio State. The effort also helped Indiana notch its first wins over Ohio State and Penn State in Big Ten action since 2004. The 2-0 record against the Nittany Lions is the first series sweep over PSU for IU since 1998. The senior also helped the Hoosiers eclipse last year's Big Ten win total of two in just the first weekend of conference contests. The Hoosiers are now 3-1 in the conference, the best start since opening 5-0 in 1997.
Bogado earned the IU Athlete of the Week honor and is recognized along with senior thrower Wil Fleming (men's track and field), senior runner Jessica Gall (women's track and field), senior Neil Kenner (men's tennis), freshman outfielder Cameron Satterwhite (baseball) and the first Varsity 8 boat (rowing) in this week's Hoosier honor roll.
Hoosier Honor Roll
Senior Wil Fleming (men's track and field):
Wil Fleming dominated the competition in the hammer throw with a first-place finish at the Diet Pepsi Invite in Gainesville, Fla., on April 1. Fleming heaved a 63.84m to win the event, which met the regional qualifying standard. This was Fleming's first meet back in over a year, after redshirting last season.
Senior Jessica Gall (women's track and field):
Jessica Gall turned in an impressive performance in the 5,000m at the Stanford Invite, capturing 12th place with a career-best time of 16:16.50. Gall shaved nearly 33 seconds off her previous personal best, which was 16:49.53 at the Stanford Invite in 2003. Her blazing time also ranks as the second fastest time in IU history and met the NCAA regional standard.
Senior Neil Kenner (men's tennis):
Senior Neil Kenner helped the Indiana men's tennis team to a split of conference matches. Kenner completed a perfect weekend with two wins at the No. 4 singles position and two victories as part of the No. 3 doubles team. On April 2 against Northwestern, Kenner nailed down the No. 4 singles position with a straight-set victory over Marc Dwyer of Northwestern. Kenner improved to 14-9 on the year with his fifth straight singles victory. He also upped his Big Ten mark to 3-2. Kenner and Michael McCarthy claimed their seventh straight victory as a team to help IU claim the doubles point. The duo defeated Dwyer and Juan Gomez at the No. 3 slot, 8-5. After starting out 0-2 as a team, Kenner and McCarthy are now 7-2, including a perfect 3-0 mark in the Big Ten. Against Wisconsin on March 31, Kenner quickly disposed of Lachezar Kasarov, 6-2, 6-1, to garner an important point for the Hoosiers as IU went on to claim a 4-3 win by taking four of the six singles slots. He teamed with Michael McCarthy in doubles to win IU's lone pairs match at the No. 3 spot, 8-1, over Brennan Phippen and Elliot Bisnow.
Freshman Outfielder Cameron Satterwhite (baseball):
Freshman Cameron Satterwhite went 5-for-11 with his first collegiate home run, three RBI, six runs, a pair of doubles and a steal in the Hoosiers' four-game set at Michigan State (March 31-April 2). Satterwhite starred at the plate in the third and fourth contests, recording his second straight three-run effort to go along with two hits in four at-bats and one RBI in the finale. The previous game, Satterwhite carded his first career three-hit game, drove in his first two runs, stole his first base and scored three times.
First Varsity 8 (rowing):
In the final race of the day, the Hoosier varsity 8 of junior Betsy Hibbard (cox), senior Ashley Airis (stroke), senior Elisabeth Benoit, senior Laura Lazaridis, junior Laura Stebbins, junior Courtney Valerious, junior Rozzie McHenry, junior Colleen Ryan and junior Elaine Deppe (bow) opened up with a strong start to move into an open-water lead at the halfway point. The Hoosiers then put on the steam to conclude a successful afternoon of competition for the Indiana rowing team with a half-length win in 6:45.5. Eastern Michigan placed second in 6:53.3, while Dayton took third in 6:56.0 and Cincinnati wound up fourth in 7:00.7. The win moved IU's first varsity 8 to 6-2 on the season. The Hoosiers are just two wins away of matching the most head-to-head wins in program history set last year with eight during an 8-5 campaign.
