Hoosiers Travel to UC-Davis Shootout

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 16 Indiana women's water polo team will take part in the UC-Davis Shootout for the first time since the 2001 season on April 8-9. Indiana will open with Cal State-San Bernardino at 12:30 p.m. EST on April 8 before facing Colorado State later in the day at 5:30 p.m. EST. On day two of the event, the Hoosiers will face No. 4 Loyola Marymount at 2:00 p.m. EST on April 9 and conclude the tournament with a match against Sonoma State.
IU has been one of the hottest teams in the country over the last month. The Hoosiers have won 13 of their last 14 matches and climbed to No. 16 in the national polls. In the process, Indiana has won its second straight CWPA Western Division regular season crown and defeated three of its last four ranked opponents.
Scouting Cal State-San Bernardino
The Coyotes are 19-11 on the year following a 14-13 loss in double overtime to Pomona-Pitzer on April 1. CSU-San Bernardino owns a mark of 10-4 in the Western Water Polo Association.
CSUSB is one of the top scoring offenses in the country at 9.8 goals per game. That number ranks fifth in the national rankings with the Coyotes scoring 293 goals in 30 contests. CSU-San Bernardino has four players with 36 or more goals led by Sarah Reneker with 78 goals. Her total ranks third nationally, while Freyja and Bridget Berg have 52 and 48 goals, respectively. Tina Torres rounds out the group with 36 marks. Heather Dohy has seen the majority of time in goal for the Coyotes with 138 saves.
Indiana and Cal State-San Bernardino met for the first time last year during the UCSB Gaucho Invitational. The Hoosiers notched a 14-4 victory over the Coyotes.
Scouting Colorado State
The Rams enter the UC-Davis Shootout with a 14-16 record in their second season as a varsity sport. Colorado State is coming off a 0-4 showing at the LMU Invitational, March 24-25. CSU dropped matches to Sonoma State (7-6), San Diego State (16-0), Redlands (5-4) and host Loyola Marymount (15-1).
Annie Quinn leads the Rams in scoring with 61 goals on the season, while Laurien White ranks second with 44. Holly Stanfill has seen the majority of time in goal for CSU and made 182 saves on the year.
IU and Colorado State met earlier this season with the Hoosiers recording a 6-1 victory at the season-opening Michigan Kickoff Tournament. Indiana is 3-0 all-time against the Rams.
Scouting No. 4 Loyola Marymount
The Lions are riding a seven-match winning streak entering a pair of contests prior to the start of the UC-Davis Shootout. LMU will face No. 18 Cal State-Northridge on April 5 and UC-Santa Cruz on April 7 before taking part of the shootout. The Lions are 16-3 on the year after knocking off a pair of ranked opponents in then-No. 14 UC-Davis, 3-2, and then-No. 8 UC-Santa Barbara, 8-7, on March 29 and March 31, respectively.
All-American goalkeeper Rachel Riddell leads the Lions' defense with 135 saves, including a national-best 12.2 saves per contest. LMU is led offensively by Katie Hicks with 36 goals. Christine Robinson ranks second on the squad with 26 goals.
The Hoosiers are 0-7 all-time against Loyola Marymount. Last season, the Hoosiers played their closest contest with the Lions, falling 6-4 at the Wolverine Invitational.
Scouting Sonoma State
The Seawolves are 16-9 on the season entering the UC-Davis Shootout. Last time out, Sonoma State fell to then-No. 20 Santa Clara, 12-11. The meeting between Indiana and Sonoma State on April 9 will be the first between the two schools.
Offensively, the Seawolves have five players with 30 or more goals on the season. Chelsea Hennan leads the way with 44 markers, while Sasha Versage ranks second with 39. Versage also leads Sonoma State in assists with 51 helpers on the year. Ashley Phelps has 38 goals on the year and leads the team in steals with 64. Amanda Haddock has 35 tallies on the year and tops the squad with 50 kickouts earned. Roxanna McEwen rounds out the 30-goal scorers with Sonoma State with 32.
Kimberley Fortson and Katlyn Brownrigg have split time in net for the Seawolves. Fortson has notched 114 saves on the year, while Brownrigg has 118.
Back-to-Back Players of the Week
Senior Janis Pardy and junior Melissa Soria earned back-to-back Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division Player of the Week honors on March 23 and March 30, respectively. They were the second and third Hoosier to earn the distinction this season after Brooke Zimmerman garnered the honor on Feb. 22.
Pardy led IU to its second straight CWPA Western Division title with a 6-4 victory over then-No. 15 Michigan. In the weekend opener against Michigan for the regular-season championship and the No. 1 seed in the Western Division Championship, Pardy notched a pair of goals, including the eventual game-winner in the third period.
In the Hoosiers' 10-9 victory over then-No. 17 Cal State-Northridge at the Wolverine Invitational on March 18, Pardy notched her seventh career hat trick. It was her fifth three-goal game of the season as the Hoosiers picked up their second straight victory over a ranked opponent. After starting the season 0-7 against ranked foes, Pardy led the team to victories over Michigan and Northridge, their first wins over ranked opponents in 2006. By virtue of those victories, the Hoosiers ran their winning streak to nine matches, which tied the second-longest streak in school history.
Pardy also scored a pair of goals in the Hoosiers' 13-7 win over Cal Baptist on March 19. The goals brought her season total to 33 and gave her 90 for her Hoosier career. She became the 11th IU player to accomplish the feat.
A week later, Soria led Hoosiers to a perfect 3-0 mark at the Fluid Five Challenge, March 25-26, with 11 goals in the three contests. In the opener against No. 16 Michigan, Soria finished with two goals and a steal. Additionally, she notched the first goal of the second half to tie the match at three as the Hoosiers went on to a 6-5 victory. The win marked the second straight weekend IU had knocked off its rival Michigan.
On March 26, Soria recorded nine goals on 10 shots in victories over Wagner and Marist. In the first game of the day against Wagner, Soria equaled a career high with four goals, only to better it by one in the win over Marist. She became the 17th Hoosier to notch five goals in a game. The Villa Park, Calif., native scored IU's first three goals for a first period hat trick against Marist. Soria had two kickouts drawn against Wagner and one steal against Marist.
Hoosiers in the National Rankings
A trio of Hoosiers hold down rankings in the nation's top 50 in respective statistical categories, while IU as a team is ranked among the top 16 in both goals per game and goals allowed per game. Indiana is 11th nationally with an average of 9.0 goals per contest and also ranks 16th in goals allowed giving up just 6.6 per match.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Pyrz ranks fifth nationally in saves with 177 stops on the season. Junior Brooke Zimmerman and senior Janis Pardy ranked among the national leaders in goals at 26th with 41 goals and 31st with 39 goals, respectively.
