EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior pitcher Mariangee Bogado fanned 10, but the Indiana softball team could not overcome a late Michigan State run in the sixth to fall, 1-0, in East Lansing, Mich., at Old College Field on April 9. The Hoosiers out-hit the Spartans, 5-3, but could not take advantage of runners in scoring position as MSU took game one of the doubleheader.
With the loss, Indiana fell to 18-16-1 on the season, while Michigan State improved to 26-11 on the year.
To start the game, senior pitcher Mariangee Bogado was on fire in the circle, fanning nine of the first 13 she faced. Coupled with a suffocating effort from the circle, the Hoosier fielding unit did not allow a single Spartan runner to reach scoring position through four.
On the offensive end for the Hoosiers, nine runners reached the base path on four hits through five innings. Despite Indiana knocking on the door, Michigan State managed to squeak out of the innings with key groundouts to hold the contest scoreless, 0-0.
In the MSU half of the fifth, the Spartans ended Bogado's no-hitter with a pair of singles in the inning. The Hoosiers, however, remained poised as freshman second baseman Sarah Padove caught a popup at second and fielded a grounder to throw out the runner at first to end the frame.
The Spartans, however, jumped on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the sixth. The scoring run reached after being hit at the plate, and advanced through the base path on a passed ball and a groundout.
In the Hoosiers half of the seventh, Bogado looked to get Indiana on the board with her second double of the contest over the center fielder. Despite the blast, two fly outs sealed the victory for the Spartans, 1-0.
Indiana faces Michigan State again for the second game of the day at 2 p.m.
