Fleenor Nabs IU Athlete of the Week Honors

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending April 30, sophomore right-hander Doug Fleenor earned the distinction.
In his first career start, Fleenor threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout as Indiana defeated Miami (Ohio), 5-0 on April 25. Fleenor tossed IU's first shutout of the season and carried a no-hitter through 6 2/3 innings. With a full count on Jon Franzese, the Miami catcher singled to right-center to end the no-hit bid. The last time a Hoosier pitcher threw a no-hitter was Mark Gramer on April 25, 1984 in a 6-0 victory over Rose-Hulman.
Fleenor used a total of 114 pitches to go the distance, striking out four batters and walking only one in the first nine-inning, complete-game shutout by a Hoosier since Chris Behrens blanked Northwestern, 7-0, in Bloomington on May 16, 2003. In addition, the last time a Hoosier threw a one-hitter came on April 8, 2000 when Brad Edwards shut down Northwestern, 2-0, in Bloomington.
"Doug did a very good job of executing the game plan," pitching coach Ty Neal said. "He was in charge from the first pitch of the game to the last pitch, which allowed him to be as successful as he was."
Fleenor then made his first career Big Ten start at Penn State on April 30. In his two starts last week, the Richmond, Ind., native allowed just two earned runs in 12 2/3 innings (1.42 ERA) and scattered just six hits with six punchouts. Fleenor is second on the team with a 3.31 overall ERA this season.
Hoosier Honor Roll
Senior pitcher Mariangee Bogado (softball) - led the charge with 22 strikeouts in the Hoosiers' 1-0 victory (11 innings) over Indiana State. Bogado took the Hoosiers on her shoulders in the first three innings, setting a record pace with seven strikeouts through nine batters. With the performance, the Mariana, Venezuela native fanned every Sycamore batter at least once.
Bogado ended the game with the second-best strikeout performance in school history of 22, one shy of her own record of 23 set earlier in the season against South Florida on Feb. 24. The double-digit outing is the senior's ninth of the season.
Freshman Seth Brandon (men's golf) - led the Hoosiers with a 292 (66-73-73-80) to finish in seventh place at the Big Ten Championships. The last Hoosier freshman to claim a top-10 finish was current PGA Tour member and former two-time All-American Jeff Overton. Overton captured ninth place at the 2002 championships. Brandon narrowly missed a spot on the All-Championships Team, falling three shots shy of Minnesota's Clayton Rask (72-74-69-74), who garnered the fifth and final spot.
Sophomore Elaine Harris (women's golf) - for the third time this season, Harris led Indiana in a tournament at the Big Ten Championships. The San Francisco, Calif., native finished tied for sixth overall with a 295 (71-70-76-78) during the event. It marked her second top-10 finish this season.
Junior Stephanos Ioannou (men's track and field) - led the Hoosiers to a successful showing at the prestigious Penn Relays April 27-29. Ioannou earned regional qualifying marks and top-10 finishes in every event he competed in this weekend. Individually, Ioannou took 16th place in the competitive 110m hurdles with a time of 14.29. Ioannou's time marked the second time this season the Larnaca, Cyprus native met the regional standard in the event. As a member of the IU men's 4x100m relay team, Ioannou helped the foursome to a pair of regional qualifying times. In the prelims of the event the team took seventh, crossing the line in 40.53. In the championships the following day, Ioannou and the 4x100m relays team claimed sixth place with a time of 40.59.
Senior Ara Towns (women's track and field) - the sprinter brought home two top-10 finishes and a regional qualifying mark in the 100m dash. Towns turned in a seventh-place time of 11.66 in the prelims of the event. Town's 11.66 in the 100m met the regional qualifying standard of 11.75. Towns finished the meet strong with a ninth-place finish of 11.87 in the event.
Rowing - the first novice 8 shell of freshman Madison Spruell (cox), freshman Ashley Johnson (stroke), junior Kourtney Beckham, freshman Jenn Maslanka, freshman Jamie Spoto, sophomore Kiri Crane, freshman Jessica Keller, freshman Brittany Billingsley and freshman Kelsey Kapral (bow) made history for the Hoosiers at the 2006 Big Ten Championships in St. Paul, Minn., on April 29. Overall, the 1N8 boat shattered IU's record of fourth place set a variety of times, most recently at the 2004 edition, with a second-place performance at the league regatta held on Lake Phalen.
