Hoosiers' Season Comes to a Close in NCAA Championship

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The 2005-06 Indiana women's tennis season came to a close with a 4-1 loss to No. 25 Georgia in the first round (64 teams) of the NCAA Championship at Vanderbilt's Currey Tennis Center on May 12. The Hoosiers capped the year with an overall record of 17-9 and a national ranking of No. 42 in the Fila/ITA poll. This season marked the 24th time IU has competed in the postseason.
Despite the use of use of two new doubles tandems, the Hoosiers dropped the doubles point. Senior Sarah Batty and new partner freshman Sigrid Fischer fell to Caroline Basu and Natalie Frazier at the No. 1 position, 8-3. Batty has been a mainstay for the Hoosiers all season in the one slot, while Fischer moved from No. 2 to No. 1.
The Bulldogs claimed the doubles point with a win at the No. 2 position. Junior Laura McGaffigan teamed with sophomore Brianna Williams for the first time this season. The IU tandem fell to Darya Ivanov and Evgenia Subbotina, 8-3.
Junior Cecile Perton and freshman Marah Calvo battled Kelley Hyndman and Sara Lett in the No. 3 doubles match until it was suspended with the Georgia pair holding the slight 6-5 advantage. Not counting today's unfinished match, Perton and Calvo finished the season with a 2-3 record at the No. 3 spot.
In singles, Georgia took the 2-0 lead as Ivanov defeated freshman Alba Berdala, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 singles position. Berdala concluded her freshman campaign with an overall singles record of 14-12.
In the No. 6 singles match, Perton gave the Hoosiers their only point of the contest with an easy 6-3, 6-1 win over Lett. Perton capped the season with a team-best singles record of 19-6, including victories in her final eight matches.
Georgia increased its lead to 3-1 with a victory at the No. 4 slot. UGA's Hyndman topped Fischer, 6-1, 6-3. Fischer concluded her maiden campaign with an overall singles record of 18-8.
The Bulldogs claimed the 4-1 first-round win as No. 26 Frazier defeated Batty, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 1 singles position. The unanimous All-Big Ten selection finished her final season as a Hoosier with a singles record of 15-11. As a Hoosier, Batty tallied a career dual singles mark of 59-40 and a doubles record of 66-35, earning All-American honors in 2004.
McGaffigan, who's match against Subbotina at the No. 2 position was entering a third set when called, finished the campaign with a record of 15-10 in singles.
Williams' No. 3 singles match against No. 111 Basu was called after the Bulldog won the first set, 7-6(5), and the second set was knotted at two. Basu marked the third ranked player Williams faced this season. The Tampa, Fla., product closed her second season as a Hoosier with a singles record of 13-10.
