BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Former Indiana linebacker Kyle Killion completed his first rookie minicamp on May 7 after signing with the Indianapolis Colts. The Kingwood, Texas native signed with the Colts on May 1 as a rookie free agent.
Killion, who started the final 34 games of his Hoosier career and ranks sixth in school history with 323 career tackles, is among six Hoosiers who were drafted or signed into the National Football League as rookie free agents. Along with Killion, the list of 2005 Hoosiers who were drafted or signed into the league includes Victor Adeyanju (St. Louis Rams), Isaac Sowells (Cleveland Browns), Ben Ishola (Miami Dolphins), John Pannozzo (Atlanta Falcons) and Chris Taylor (Houston Texans).
The 6-0, 224-pounder started the first eight games of the 2005 season at outside linebacker before a hand injury to Pannozzo forced him back to middle linebacker against Minnesota, Michigan and Purdue. He finished with 91 tackles on the year, including 10 tackles against Minnesota, a career-high 13 at Michigan and finished with 12 tackles against Purdue.
Killion sat down with IUHOOSIERS.com to talk about signing with the Colts, minicamp and his professional career.
On signing with the Indianapolis Colts:
KK: "It felt great. It was cool getting picked up by a team that is one of the best in the business. I didn't even know I was going to be able to play college football, so I really didn't want to make any goals that weren't reasonable. Once I went to IU, it just kind of slowly became one of my goals."
On the first rookie minicamp on May 5-7:
KK: "It was kind of like an introduction to how they go about their business. It was an opportunity to get to know the coaching staff and playbook. They showed us how things operate in the pros. We had to get up at six in the morning and watch film. I had a great time, it was fantastic."
On what he worked on prior to minicamp and after the first rookie camp:
KK: "I have been working out really hard with some weight room buddies - Jake (Powers) and Casey (Nowinski). I have really been hitting it hard. I have been doing things to make sure I can still move well. I have been running a lot and mixing it up every few days doing both distance and sprints. I need to make sure I stay in shape. I have been looking at the playbook to keep football on my mind."
On what he is expecting out of the next minicamp on May 19-21:
KK: "I am not real sure what to expect out of this upcoming camp. I want to try to learn as much as I can from the veterans. It is important to try and pick up on things quickly, and hopefully, that can help me out."
