Austin - The Indiana softball team could not overcome early errors and the strength of Texas' pitching, falling to the No. 3 Texas Longhorns, 3-0, on May 20, at Red and Charline McCombs Field in Austin. Despite solid innings from senior pitchers Mariangee Bogado and Megan Roark, who combined to allow only four hits, the Hoosiers could not get things rolling at the plate against the region's top seed.
With the loss, Indiana fell to 30-24-1 on the season, while Texas improved to 51-7 on the year.
Texas jumped out first, scoring twice in the opening frame to take a 2-0 lead. Indiana, who started shaky from the circle, gave up two quick walks and a double, resulting in the Longhorns' scores. A Hoosier hit in the bottom of the inning by sophomore left fielder Julia Hamilton opened the game up for Indiana, but fell short as Texas struck out two straight to end the opening frame.
A scoreless second brought up the Longhorns in the top of the third with a 2-0 lead. In the frame, UT took advantage of another Hoosier error to cushion their lead at 3-0. Indiana, however, could not respond, remaining cold from the plate with just one hit through two innings.
Once Indiana settled into the game in the top of the fourth, it held Texas at bay for the remainder of the contest. Bogado threw five of those innings, fanning two in the process. The Mariara, Venezuela native then handed the reigns over to Roark who came in and dominated the latter half of the game, allowing only one hit and striking out three through two innings of relief.
The defensive hold, however, proved too late as the Hoosiers could not bring a score of their own over the plate, falling to the Longhorns, 3-0.
With the performance, Bogado moved into second place all-time with 299 strikeouts on the season, replacing All-American Amy Unterbrink's (1983-86) mark of 298 set in 1984. Unterbrink owns the all-time record with 370 during the 1986 season.
Indiana will now face the winner of the UTSA vs. Utah game at 6 p.m. in order to play back into the Austin Regional Championship game on May 21, at 1 p.m. against Texas.
