BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana baseball head coach Tracy Smith announced on May 24 that right-handed pitcher Eric Arnett has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend Indiana University beginning in the fall semester of 2006. Arnett is the 17th signee in Smith's first recruiting class as Hoosier skipper.
A 6-5, 215-pounder from Pataskala, Ohio, Arnett led head coach Don Schone's Watkins Memorial High School club to its first district title and a matchup against undefeated Washington Courthouse in regional action on May 26. Arnett held fellow signee Jason Ferrell and Bishop Watterson High School (23-6) to just one hit and no runs over the final five innings to move on in the state tournament.
A three-time all-conference and all-county selection, Arnett also has collected all-district honors on two occasions. He set the Watkins Memorial home run record as a junior (7) and earned a spot in the Ohio North-South All-Star Game.
Arnett also excelled on the football field and the basketball court. The standout wide receiver set school records for receptions, yardage and touchdowns as well as garnering a selection to football's North-South All-Star Game. En route to topping Watkins career charts, Arnett made all-conference, all-district, all-region and all-county during two seasons and all-state once.
On the hardwood, Arnett was named the team MVP and continued to corral postseason accolades. He picked up all-conference, all-district and all-county honors for two years.
"Eric is a big strong kid with loads of potential," Smith said. "He kind of flew under the radar screen this year because of all the attention he was receiving as a Division I football recruit, but I think Eric realizes he can be pretty special in baseball. We could not be happier that he chose to attend Indiana."
