Hoosiers Battle Boilermakers in Big Ten Finale

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - The Indiana softball team battles archrival Purdue this weekend, hosting the Boilermakers on May 6 at the IU Softball Field before traveling to West Lafayette, Ind., to finish the series on May 7, at the Varsity Softball Complex.
Indiana's games are set for 1 p.m. starts on both days. The series also holds postseason implications for the Hoosiers, as a series sweep will clinch a Big Ten tournament berth for IU, its first since 1996.
AT&T CRIMSON AND GOLD CUP
The rivalry between IU and Purdue continues with the 2005-06 AT&T Crimson & Gold Cup, also presented by Simon Malls. The overall winner of the contest will be awarded a trophy at the end of the season.
Each sport can earn one point toward the overall championship. A total of 20 points can be won. The winner of regular season head-to-head competition earns the point for its institution. Should the teams split or tie in regular season competition the point is split between the two institutions (i.e. if each team wins two games in baseball the point is split).
Indiana and Purdue will square off on May 6 in Bloomington, Ind., at the IU Softball Field before concluding the series on May 7 in West Lafayette, at the Varsity Softball Complex. Both games are set to start at 1 p.m., with Indiana currently leading Purdue 9.5-7.5 in the standings.
SENIOR DAY
The Indiana softball team will take the opportunity to thank its three seniors on May 6 during the Indiana/Purdue series. The Hoosiers will say farewell to pitcher Mariangee Bogado, right fielder Lauren Hines and pitcher Megan Roark, who all will be playing in their final home game at the IU Softball Field. Also during the ceremony, IU will pay tribute to Purdue's six seniors.
FAMILY ATTRACTIONS
The Indiana softball team would like to make this season's home games a family affair, with each contest at the IU Softball Field catering to a family atmosphere. Along with competitive action on the diamond, giveaways will take place during the second through sixth innings at every IU home game. Prizes include gift cards to Moe's Southwest Grill, Buccetos and the T.I.S. Bookstore.

PURDUE PREVIEW
Purdue brings a 30-28 record into the games with the Hoosiers. Kim Maher is in her first year with the Boilermakers and as a head coach.
Tricia Lilley heads the offensive charge for Purdue with a .348 batting average. Staci Falzon holds the team's second-best average with a .301 clip. Diana LaRiva shoulders the pitching duties for Purdue with a 2.68 ERA in 30 appearances.
Purdue leads the all-time series 22-21, taking the lead in 2005 with a sweep of the series.
WEEK IN REVIEW
Indiana took a forced break from Big Ten Conference games this past week, while also taking care of non-conference business in the process.
IU opened the week with a pair of shutout victories over Ball State and Indiana State, by scores of 2-0 and 1-0, respectively. Against ISU, senior pitcher Mariangee Bogado registered 22 strikeouts and threw a one-hitter in the effort. The mark is the second most punchouts thrown in a single game for a Hoosiers, one short of Bogado's own record of 23 she set earlier this season against South Florida. Over the weekend, due to rain, the Hoosiers cancelled their series against the Minnesota Gophers.
BEST IN THE BUSINESS
Senior right fielder Lauren Hines is well on her way to posting the best batting average in the last nine years.
Currently, the Hoosier owns a .423 clip, just below Monica Armendarez's (1995-98) season mark of a .437 in 1997. If the season ended today, the senior would finish with the third-best mark in a season, and the best average since Stormy Hanson registered a .382 in 2003.
STEP UP TO THE PLATE
The Indiana pitching staff has prided itself on being one of the best in the Big Ten. Not only have senior pitchers Mariangee Bogado and Megan Roark and junior hurler Christy Wahl been solid throughout the season, they have combined to be one of the best contingents in IU history.
The threesome has allowed only 245 hits on the season, which ranks fifth all-time in the IU record book for a season.
THIS IS MY FIELD
Indiana is on its way to rewriting the record books in fielding percentage. In 2006, the Hoosiers own a .971 fielding efficiency, which if the season ended today would become an all-time best since the inception of the program more than 30 years ago. The current record is a .963 posted by the 1986 Hoosiers.
Incidentally, the 1986 squad made it all the way to the Women's College World Series.
QUEEN OF THE MOUNTAIN
For senior pitcher Mariangee Bogado, her final season as a Hoosier is playing out to be best of her career. With the conference season underway, Bogado is ranked in the top 10 of 15 different pitching and batting categories. Below is a list of where the Mariana, Venezuela ranks in Big Ten games only.
