Indiana Drops Game Two to Iowa

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Facing 6-3 right-hander Austin Seward, the Indiana baseball team fell to Iowa, 6-0, in the second game of a twinbill at Sembower Field on May 6. With a pair of victories on the afternoon, the Hawkeyes improved to 21-25 overall and 10-13 in Big Ten action, while the Hoosiers are now 17-28 overall and 7-16 in league play.
Seward went the distance en route to his first shutout and second complete game of the season. He scattered seven hits while striking out four and not allowing a walk.
Junior designated hitter Ben Greenspan and senior right fielder Zach Boswell collected a pair of hits in three at-bats for the Hoosiers. Greenspan finished the doubleheader 3-for-6 with his second homer of the season, one RBI and one run.
Center fielder Nathan Price laced a triple into right-center field, and second baseman Travis Sweet singled up the middle to knock him in to move Iowa in front, 1-0, in the first.
Both teams could not take advantage of runners on first and second with nobody out in the second, but the Hawkeyes did not let the same opportunity pass by in the third. With left fielder L.J. Sims on second and Price on first, Sweet again delivered a base hit through the right side of the infield to plate Sims.
Shortstop Jason White added an RBI single, and first baseman Skyler Moss tacked on a two-run base knock to make it 5-0 entering the bottom of the third.
Sophomore reliever Chris McCombs escaped a man-on-third, no-out jam in the top of the fourth before Greenspan and Boswell sparked a two-out rally with back-to-back singles in the home half of the frame. However, Seward ended the threat to maintain his shutout.
Iowa tacked on a solo mark in the sixth for the final margin as Price collected a run-scoring two-bagger.
In relief, McCombs turned in four solid innings. The Louisville native struck out three while giving up one run on four hits with one walk and three Ks.
The teams wrap up the series with a 1 p.m. start time on Sunday, May 7, at Sembower Field.
Game Notes
-Senior Reggie Watson, who started the first 43 games in center field, made his first career start at second base.
