Hoosiers Close Out Spring with Victory

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana men's soccer team capped its spring season with a 3-0 victory over Butler at North Central High School in Indianapolis. The game was part of a benefit for Special Olympics and was played at the former home of North Central graduates Greg Stevning, Charley Traylor and Chris Munroe. With the victory, IU closed its seven-game spring slate with a 4-0-3 record.
"I am excited about the direction we are headed," Indiana head coach Mike Freitag said. "We had to replace six of our 10 field players, and especially toward the end of the spring, things really started to come together. Against Butler, we played better in the second half. The guys played at a faster-pace and moved the ball better."
For the second time in as many contests, redshirt freshman John Mellencamp recorded the game-winner. Freshman midfielder Kevin Alston found Mellencamp for the score just 9:51 into the contest. Mellencamp also notched the game-winner in the Hoosiers' 2-0 victory over the Mexican Youth National team in front of nearly 6,000 fans on April 18.
Junior forward Kevin Robson continued to lead the Hoosiers in scoring during the spring. He notched his third tally of the spring slate, as he broke free on the right side of the field before finding the back of the net. Freshman midfielder Lee Hagedorn added his second goal of the spring with 10.6 seconds remaining in the contest. Hagedorn also notched a tally in a 4-1 victory over IUPUI.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Munroe showed well between the pipes in earning the shutout. The Indianapolis native stopped a penalty kick in the second half to preserve the Hoosier shutout. It has become a habit for Munroe to stone PKs, as he stopped two of three during the 2005 campaign.
The Hoosiers open the 2006 slate with an exhibition affair in Ft. Wayne, Ind., against the University of Illinois-Chicago on Tuesday, August 15 at 5 p.m. The exhibition portion of the schedule will close with a rematch of Soccer America's top game of the 2005 season. IU will battle Maryland at the IPFW Soccer Showcase on Friday, August 18. The Hoosiers came back from a three-goal deficit for the first time in school history with a trio of second-half markers to tie the Terps, 3-3, in College Park, Md., on October 26. IU opens the regular season at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament in South Bend, Ind. The Hoosiers will play Creighton on Friday, August 25, at 5 p.m., before battling UAB at 11:30 a.m., on Sunday, August 27.
