Hoosiers Earn Third Straight NCAA Bid

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the third time in as many years, the Indiana men's golf team has been selected to the NCAA Men's Golf Championships, it was announced by the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee on May 8. The Hoosiers will participate in the East Regional for the second straight season at the Lake Nona Golf Club in Orlando on Thursday-Saturday, May 18-20. The University of Central Florida and the Central Florida Sports Commission will serve as hosts of the regional.
The championships will be conducted May 31-June 3 at the Crosswater Golf Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. The University of Portland is the host institution for this year's championships.
Three regional tournaments, encompassing the current nine regions, will be conducted over the three days. A total of 27 teams and six individuals not on selected teams were assigned to each regional site. Ten teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each regional to the championship finals.
"We are thrilled to be going to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season," Indiana head coach Mike Mayer said. "It is a relief to get in because we felt like we did the job down the stretch. We are extremely happy and get to play a great golf course I know very well. I think we have as good a chance as anyone to advance out of the regional."
This marks the first time Indiana has made three consecutive NCAA appearances since the Hoosiers advanced to six straight from 1972-77. It also is the third NCAA berth in Mayer's eight years at the helm of the IU program.
The Hoosiers played their way into the NCAAs with a strong stretch run, including two championships (Boilermaker Invitational, Fossum/Spartan Invitational) and a runner-up finish (Kepler Intercollegiate) in its final four events. Indiana ended the spring with two victories, two seconds and one third in seven events and led the Big Ten Championships through three rounds before difficult playing conditions ended its chances at a Big Ten title.
