Bogado Named IU Athlete of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending May 7, senior hurler Mariangee Bogado grabbed the distinction for the second time this season. Bogado is recognized after leading the Hoosiers to a series sweep of archrival Purdue this past weekend, ensuring IU's ticket to the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 1996.
Bogado single-handedly led the Hoosiers the wins over Purdue with 13 innings of work in the circle. The senior fanned 14 batters in the series, while scattering seven hits in the process.
The suffocating effort in the circle helped Indiana out-hit Purdue 15-7. Bogado recorded a 1.08 ERA, started both contests and gave up two earned runs while holding opposing batters to a .152 batting average.
Bogado not only led the Hoosiers from the circle, but registered a .667 batting average in the process, including a 4-for-6 effort in the series. In game one, Bogado drew two walks and took advantage of her remaining at bats, going 2-for-2. In game two, she went 2-for-4 in the 5-2 victory, including two runs and a double. Bogado's efforts helped Indiana and her earn their first trip to the Big Ten Tournament since 1996, helped Indiana earn only its third 25-or-more win season and its highest Big Ten win output since 1997.
Bogado earned the IU Athlete of the Week honor and is recognized along with fifth-year senior Ara Towns (women's track and field) and fifth-year senior John Jefferson (men's track and field), in this week's Hoosier honor roll.

Fifth-year senior Ara Towns (women's track and field):
Indiana's Ara Towns continues to be a dominant force in the 100m this outdoor season. Towns turned in her third regional-qualifying time in the 100m of the 2006 season. The redshirt senior picked up the Hoosier women's only title at the 28th-annual Billy Hayes Invitational on May 5 with an 11.51 performance in the 100m. Currently, Towns sits with the 11th best time (11.50) in the Mideast region and 29th nationally in her signature event.
Fifth-year senior John Jefferson (men's track and field):
In his final home meet of his illustrious Hoosier career, Indiana redshirt senior John Jefferson turned in one of IU's 14 first-place finishes at the 28th-annual Billy Hayes Invite on May 5 at the Billy Hayes Track. Jefferson turned in a regional-qualifying time of 3:41.96 in the 1,500m, nearly six seconds better than the regional mark. Jefferson's time marked the fastest 1,500m effort in the Mideast region and the sixth-best time in the nation for this outdoor season.
