Batty Picks Up Three More Honors

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana senior women's tennis standout Sarah Batty added three more honors to her already impressive resume. Batty, along with men's basketball senior Marshall Strickland, earned the Big Ten's Outstanding Sportsmanship Award. Additionally, the Chesterfield, England native garnered the Hoosier Award and the Aline Robinson Mental Attitude Award for her excellence during the 2005-06 season.
"These are great honors for Sarah," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "I'm very happy for her. She has been a great player and student, and now she is being honored for her sportsmanship. She is very deserving of these awards."
Batty and Strickland were two of 22 student-athletes named Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners by the Big Ten office on June 7. The Hoosier pair was selected from a pool of 276 student-athletes throughout the academic year who displayed positive sportsmanship.
A total of 11 men and women, one from each school in the conference, were honored with the distinction. All of the Sportsmanship Award honorees have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, theses student-athletes must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Batty garnered the Hoosier Award for brining honor and distinction to the women's tennis program during the course of the year. Additionally, Batty earned the Aline Robinson Mental Attitude Award for her athletic success coupled with exceptional leadership and mental attitude.
The Hoosiers' only senior closed out a heralded four-year career at Indiana as a two time all-conference selection, capping her stay in Bloomington with an overall dual-match singles record of 59-40 and a 66-35 mark in doubles. Batty and partner Linda Tran earned All-America honors in doubles in 2004 after advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships. While at Indiana, Batty led the Hoosiers to three NCAA Championships appearances. In the classroom, she earned Academic All-Big Ten honors on three occasions as a sport marketing and management major.
