Five Hoosiers Named Academic All-Big Ten

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Five Indiana women's tennis student-athletes earned Academic All-Big Ten honors for the 2005-06 season, the league office announced on June 1. Senior Sarah Batty, juniors Laura McGaffigan and Cecile Perton and sophomores Nikki Hein and Brianna Williams raise IU head coach Lin Loring's total academic all-conference selections to 86.
Batty picked up her third Academic All-Big Ten nod of her illustrious career at Indiana. The two-time all-conference selection capped her senior campaign with a career dual-match singles record of 59-40 and a 66-35 mark in doubles, while earning All-America honors in doubles in 2004. The Chesterfield, England native is a sport marketing and management major.
McGaffigan earned her second academic all-conference accolade this season. The Davenport, Iowa native closed the season with a singles record of 15-10 at the No. 2 slot and an 18-7 mark at the No. 1 doubles position with Batty. McGaffigan is majoring in business.
Perton, a double major in economics and Spanish, added the second Academic All-Big Ten honor to her resume. The Briey, France native led the Hoosiers with a team-high 19-6 dual singles record. Additionally, Perton closed the season with eight consecutive singles wins at the No. 6 position.
Hein nabbed the first conference academic honor of her career. A studio art major, Hein claimed a victory in her only dual singles appearance of the season against Chelsey Casperson of Butler, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 6 spot.
Williams, a public and nonprofit management major from Tampa, Fla., earned her second academic all-league nod of her career. Williams closed the season with 13-10 mark in singles and a 17-7 doubles mark at the No. 2 slot. The Hoosiers' No. 3 singles player opened the dual season with six straight wins.
Indiana University Athletics claimed a total of 82 Academic All-Big Ten selections for the spring. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.
