A Look Ahead: Western Michigan

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana football team opens the 2006 campaign with Western Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 2. The Hoosiers and Broncos will square off at Memorial Stadium at 6 p.m. EDT to open head coach Terry Hoeppner's second season at the helm of the Hoosiers.
Western Michigan closed last season with a 7-4 overall record and a third-place finish in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) with a league mark of 5-3. The Broncos enter their second season under 2005 MAC Coach of the Year Bill Cubit. Cubit led WMU to wins over Southern Illinois (34-28), Temple (19-16), Buffalo (31-21), Bowling Green (45-14), Kent State (44-14), Eastern Michigan (44-36) and Central Michigan (31-24) last year.
The Broncos return 17 starters (6 offense, 9 defense, 2 special teams) from a season ago. Quarterback Ryan Cubit captains the offense after leading the Broncos to the 32nd-best passing offense in the country. Wide receiver Joe Chapple (58 catches for 465 yards), running back Mark Bonds (456 yards on 101 carries), tight end Brandon Ledbetter (11 catches for 76 yards) and offensive lineman Robbie Krutilla and Dominc Moran will drive the Bronco offense in 2006.
On defense, WMU returns defensive lineman Nick Varcadipane, who earned second team freshman All-America honors, and All-MAC selection linebacker Ameer Ismail. All-MAC strong safety Antwain Allen enters his junior campaign after completing 2005 with a team-high 95 tackles.
This year's meeting marks the third time the Hoosiers and the Broncos have met. Indiana holds a 2-0 advantage in the series, including a 45-30 win in their last meeting on Sept. 12, 1998 in Bloomington.
