A Look Ahead: Ball State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana football team hits the road for its first away contest of the 2006 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m. ET. The Hoosiers will travel north to Muncie, Ind., to take on Mid-American Conference (MAC) opponent Ball State at Ball State Stadium (22,500).
Last season, the Cardinals closed the year 4-7 overall and 4-4 in the MAC, including wins in three of their final four games. This season, IU is one of three (Purdue and Michigan) Big Ten teams on the BSU schedule.
Ball State returns 10 of 11 starters on offense, including quarterback Joey Lynch, who threw for 1,993 yards last season. The Cardinals also return a pair of 400-plus yard receivers in Terry Moss and Louis Johnson. BSU will lose its rushing leader from 2005, but B.J. Hill, who averaged a team-high 5.1 yards per carry last season, will take over the starting role.
On the other side of the ball, the Cardinals return five starters, including linebackers Bryant Haines and Brad Seiss. The pair accounted for 167 tackles in 2005. Ball State also returns defensive lineman William Wise, strong side linebacker Wendall Brown and strong safety Erik Keys.
This year's meeting marks the third between the two in-state foes and the first since 1999. IU holds a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series.
Indiana head coach Terry Hoeppner is no stranger to the MAC. The former Miami (Ohio) skipper, Hoeppner is an impressive 39-12 against his former conference and 2-1 against the Cardinals.
