TUCSON, Ariz. - Former IU standout, six-time All-American and Olympic Bronze Medalist Win Young passed away on June 22 in Tucson, Ariz.
"Win was not only a terrific athlete and Olympian, but he was also a terrific person," Indiana head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber said. "He was and always will be an Indiana diving legend and a diver associated with the early glory years for Indiana diving during Hobie Billingsley's tenure. Win never met anyone he didn't like and always had a smile and hello for everyone. It is a real loss for the IU diving family."
During his time with the Hoosiers, Young snared six All-American certificates from 1967-69. In 1967, he took second on the three-meter and third on the one-meter. In 1968, he finished second on the three-meter and fourth on the one-meter. In 1969, he placed second on both the one-meter and three-meter.
Young also competed for the United States at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. At the Olympiad, he claimed bronze on the platform event. Additionally, Young helped IU to a pair of NCAA Championships in 1968 and 1969, and served on three Big Ten title teams from 1967-69.
After Young's competitive career ended, he entered the collegiate coaching ranks. He began at West Point and then went to the University of Arizona.
According to University of Arizona head diving coach Michele Mitchell, "Young will be cremated in an "Arizona Wildcat Diving" shirt as per his request and put into a bronze urn (the same color as his 1968 Olympic medal). His ashes will also be interned into the new pool is building and a small plaque with "Win Young" (don't think name, think of what it says to young divers) will be installed on the 10-meter platform where the divers will see it."
