BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana men's basketball player Marshall Strickland and women's tennis player Sarah Batty were a pair of 22 student-athletes who were named Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners, announced the Big Ten office on June 7. Batty and Strickland were selected from a pool of 276 student-athletes throughout the academic year who displayed positive sportsmanship.
A total of 11 men and women, one from each school in the conference, were honored with the distinction. All of the Sportsmanship Award honorees have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, theses student-athletes must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Strickland became an intricate part of the men's basketball team's success a year ago. The Mt. Airy, Md., native finished the season with 12.6 points and 3.5 rebounds, while shooting .484 from the floor and .479 from beyond the arc - all career-high numbers. Strickland led the Hoosiers to a 19-12 overall record and an NCAA Tournament second round appearance in 2006, marking his third postseason appearance in four years as a Hoosier.
Batty also closed out a heralded four-year career at Indiana. The two-time all-conference selection capped her senior campaign with a career dual-match singles record of 59-40 and a 66-35 mark in doubles, while earning All-America honors in doubles in 2004.
