SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Indiana goalkeeper Haley Exner was honored by the San Diego Hall of Champions as the Breitbard Star of the Month recipient for September. Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane presented Exner with her award at the organization's Sports at Lunch reception on June 28.
"This is a great award for Haley," head coach Amy Robertson said. "She gained so much confidence last year and having her return in goal for us this coming year is tremendous."
In her first season as a starter, Exner helped the Hoosiers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance and a second-place finish in the Big Ten Conference and became the winningest goalkeeper in program history with 17 victories. Exner garnered first team all-conference honors and National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-West Region honors. In 2005, she picked up three Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors and tallied five shutouts. Additionally, the San Diego, Calif., native is Indiana's career goals against average leader with 2.14.
The San Diego Hall of Champions has been presenting Star of the Month awards to San Diego athletes since 1946. Awards are presented to professional, amateur and high school athletes who play for San Diego teams or are from San Diego high schools who have demonstrated exceptional performance in their respective sport.
