Five Hoosiers Set for Indiana's North-South All-Star Game

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Five Indiana University football signees will compete in the 40th-annual Grange Insurance/Indiana Football Coaches Association (IFCA) North-South All-Star Game on July 15 at Carmel High School at 1:30 p.m. Quarterback Ben Chappell (Bloomington South), offensive lineman James Brewer (Indianapolis Arlington) and linebacker William Patterson (Lawrence North) will suit up for the South squad, while offensive lineman Cody Faulkner (Hamilton Heights) and defensive lineman Deonte Mack (Elkhart) will line up for the North squad.
Brewer played as an offensive guard for Indianapolis Arlington under head coach Rob Patchett. The 6-8, 295-pound prospect offers a tremendous upside as he only began playing football again as a senior after switching to basketball as a sophomore and junior. After spending his first two years of high school at Warren Central and one year at Lawrence Central, Brewer transferred to Arlington, where he earned class 5A all-state recognition. Meanwhile, he garnered Indianapolis Star all-city football honors in 2005, and he also plays basketball. The son of Neitra Squires and James A. Brewer was born on Dec. 23, 1987.
Chappell played quarterback for Bloomington South under head coach Drew Wood. The 6-3, 215-pound signal caller accounted for 2,359 yards and 27 touchdowns his senior season to earn Associated Press, Indiana High School Coaches Association and Bloomington Herald-Times first team all-state laurels. He also ran for another seven scores en route to the Conference Indiana championship. His six-touchdown performance against Pike on Sept. 30 tied for the best output in Indiana in 2005 and also set a new school record, while his 399 yard output against Decatur Central on Oct. 14 was the fourth-best total in the state. As a junior, Chappell threw for 1,925 yards and 25 touchdowns to garner Indiana Football Coaches Association Junior Class 5A all-state recognition. A preseason Midwest quarterback Fab 15 pick, Chappell earned a Rivals.com Indiana Top 15 rating. Additionally, Chappell was a four-year letterwinner in basketball for a perennial top 10 in the state program and a member of the Indiana Football Coaches Association academic all-state team. The son of Steve and Laura Chappell was born on June 2, 1987.
Faulkner played offensive line for Hamilton Heights under head coach Steven Stirn. The 6-5, 306-pounder was named to the All-State Top 33 and Tremendous 26 teams and led Hamilton Heights to an 8-5 season. The massive lineman also garnered CBS Sportsline All-America All-Region honors as a senior. He also picked up all-state accolades both his sophomore and junior seasons. Meanwhile, Rivals.com rated Faulkner the 44th-best lineman coming out of the class of 2006. Additionally, he earned class 3A first team all-state kudos, while recording a blocking efficiency of 92 percent during his time at Hamilton Heights. Furthermore, Faulkner claimed Kokomo Tribune all-area first team recognition, while picking up All-Mid-Indiana Conference first team honors. He also garnered a spot on the Fab 50 offensive lineman watch list and competed in the Max Emfinger All-American Bowl in Shreveport, La.. Faulkner is the son of former Florida tight end Chris Faulkner, who went on to play with the Dallas Cowboys (1983-84), San Diego Chargers (1985) and Los Angeles Rams (1984). The son of Chris and Cheryl Faulkner was born on Sept. 3, 1987.
Mack played defensive tackle for Elkhart Central under head coach Mark Hummell. The 6-3, 275-pounder played defensive end as a sophomore (74 total tackles, seven for loss) before switching to tackle as a junior (84 total tackles, nine for loss, four sacks) and nose tackle as a senior. Mack earned class 5A first team all-state honors as a senior, despite facing numerous double teams. Mack recorded 89 total tackles, (45 solo, 44 assisted), four sacks, eight tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and five passes broken up. He is the son of Sonya Mack.
Patterson played linebacker for Lawrence North under head coach Tom Dilley. The 6-1, 210-pounder has been timed at 4.6 in the 40-yard dash as a prep. As a senior, Patterson totaled 132 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and four sacks en route to Indianapolis Star Defensive Player of the Year honors. Overall, he led Lawrence North to a 9-3 record his final campaign. Patterson also had a trio of interceptions and scored three defensive touchdowns, returning a pair of his interceptions for scores and a fumble as well. That effort earned Class 5A all-state first team recognition. Patterson saw time at running back as a senior, where he finished with 154 yards on 20 carries. Patterson also picked up Indianapolis Star All-Marion County kudos for his senior season. In a 31-7 win over North Central, Patterson returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown. The son of Kathy Patterson was born on July 20, 1987.
