Hoosiers Ink Four More for 2007

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana softball program and head coach Stacey Phillips added four more student-athletes to the 2006-07 roster. Emily Bergeson (Cleveland, Ill./Bradley), Kristin King (Fort Branch, Ind./Gibson Southern), Jennifer Moore (Jackson, Tenn./Volunteer State Community College) and Monica Wright (Morrison, Ill./Northern Iowa) will join Stephanie Turner (Pendleton, Ind./ Pendleton Heights) and Jennifer Glueckert (South Bend, Ind./ John Adams) in the Hoosier lineup next season.
Bergeson joins the Hoosiers as a sophomore from Bradley. The versatile infielder from Cleveland, Ill., made 47 starts for the Braves and closed the 2006 season with the third-most hits on the team with 38, including three home runs. A three-time first team all-state selection in Ohio, Bergeson holds the Geneseo High School record in five categories (homeruns, RBI, slugging percentage, doubles and fielding percentage). Additionally, she earned all-conference honors on three occasions. Bergeson owned a .520 batting average as a senior, following a junior season in which she boasted a .516 mark.
In summer ball, Bergeson led her team to the state title four times and finished in the top 25 in the nation on four occasions. A seven-time team MVP, Bergeson earned top-player honors in the National Softball Association (NSA) Qualifier Tournament.
"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to coach Emily during her academic and athletic careers at Indiana University," Phillips said. "She is a tireless worker and will compete at a number of positions to help IU softball continue our upward trend of improvements in our quest for greatness."
"IU is perfect for me," Bergeson said. "The school was very appealing, as well as the softball program. I'm ready to be challenged, and I think Indiana University and the softball team will do that for me."
King becomes Phillips' third incoming freshman and the third newcomer from Indiana. King led Gibson Southern to the Indiana state title in 2004 and 2005. King earned honorable mention all-conference honors as a senior to go along with an all-county selection.
Additionally, King was a standout on the Gibson Central basketball team. She will play on the Southern Indiana RBIs prior to coming to Bloomington in the fall.
"Kristin will immediately impact the team with her work ethic and enthusiasm for this great game of softball," Phillips said. "Kristin loves Indiana University and her enthusiasm makes Indiana University and our staff welcome her with open arms. She's ready to play and we're excited she chose IU."
"I chose IU because I love playing softball, and I have enjoyed watching all of Indiana's athletic programs since I was young," King said. "I thought it would be fun to play an awesome game at a great school."
Moore comes to Bloomington after earning second team All-America honors at Volunteer State Community College (Gallatin, Tenn.) for the second consecutive year as a pitcher. Last season, Moore ranked third in the nation in strikeouts (284) and led Region XII in Ks. As a freshman, she struck out 354, while leading the nation in wins and strikeouts. Last season, Moore recorded a 23-7 record in the circle with an ERA of 0.97. Moore picked up first team Tennessee Junior College Athletic Association (TJCAA) All-Region XII Conference accolades as a sophomore and TJCAA Pitcher of the Year honors in 2005.
In summer ball, Moore's team recorded undefeated state campaigns for three years and took the World Series crown in 2002 with the Dixie Debs. Moore, a four-year letterwinner in softball for Jackson Central Merry High School, recorded 80 wins during her prep campaign.
Over her high school career, Moore earned all-conference and all-district honors all four seasons. As a junior and senior, she earned a spot on the All-West team and garnered the Jackson Sun Player of the Year honor as a senior. During her senior season, Moore led west Tennessee in punchouts and boasted an ERA of 0.88.
"Jennifer will be looked to the fill some rather large holes left on the mound by Mariangee Bogado and Megan Roark," Phillips said. "Jen has the physique and drive to take her pitching to this next level. She knows what it takes and feels like to win and she'll do so in a Hoosier uniform."
"It has always been a dream of mine to play on a highly-competitive NCAA Division I softball program and get a great education while doing so," Moore said. "I believe IU is the place where I can achieve all of my goals."
Wright becomes a Hoosier after spending a season at Northern Iowa where she led the Panthers in strikeouts with 91. Wright earned a record of 7-19 in the circle in 169.2 innings of work.
A three-year letterwinner at Morrison High School, Wright earned all-conference honorable mention as a sophomore and was a first team all-conference selection her junior and senior years. A three-time all-area team selection, Wright garnered second team all-state honors as a junior and first team all-state accolades her senior season. Wright led Morrison to four Three Rivers Athletic Conference (Trac 8) titles and earned the conference's player of the year on two occasions. A two-time team captain and MVP, Wright was finalist for Athlete of the Year. Wright holds the Illinois High School Athletic Association record for the lowest career earned run average (0.07) and most perfect games in a season (7). As a senior, Wright was a finalist for the Quad City Times Athlete of the Year. While at Morrison, Wright also participated in volleyball, receiving two second team all-conference selections, and was a member of the National Honor Society.
With the Hartland Havoc, Wright led the summer club to three Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of Illinois state titles and a ninth-place finish at the ASA "A" nationals in 2005. In 2004, the Havoc finished runner-up at the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) national tournament.
"Monica was a heaven sent after the graduations of Mariangee Bogado and Megan Roark." Phillips said. "Monica was a very highly recruited player during my interim head coaching year and through time she has decided to take her schooling to a new path. She will be looked upon to throw her power pitches in many innings of the season. Monica is looking to be challenged to great extents and she will not only have that wish fulfilled on the field, but in the classroom as well. Monica succeeds in all she does, therefore, she fits the mold of this great Indiana University softball program."
"I chose Indiana because I wanted to play in the Big Ten," Wright said. "I really liked the coaches and admired what the team accomplished in 2006. My parents and I loved the school and the campus as well."
